DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The 18th-ranked Embry-Riddle women's lacrosse team was successful in its home opener on Saturday, downing Assumption (0-1) 14-10 at the ERAU Lacrosse Stadium. The Eagles remain undefeated at 3-0 on the year.
The Eagles trailed 3-0 to start Saturday's contest but ended the first quarter tied 4-4 with the Greyhounds.
Murphy McDonough got the Eagles on the board with her 12th goal of the year, and ERAU quickly scored two more, both by
Sallie Squire, to even the contest at 3-3.
Zariah Durham's free position goal with 3:56 on the clock in the first quarter gave the Eagles their first lead of the day, but the Greyhounds were able to tie the game in the closing minutes of the period.
After Jenna Joseph scored her first goal of the season to open the second period, the Blue and Gold went on a 5-0 run to take a 9-5 lead over the visitors.
Aliza Garofalo started the run with a free position shot for her first goal of the season at the 11:20 mark. Subsequent goals by Garofalo,
Anna Maurer, Squire and Durham helped the Eagles to a 9-6 lead at the half.
The second-quarter run proved to be the difference in the game. The teams scored two goals apiece in the third and ERAU edged Assumption 3-2 in the fourth to seal the win.
Squire led all players with five goals on six shots. Garofalo and Durham finished with three goals apiece with Durham adding two assists and two caused turnovers.
Elizabeth Ninesling won six draw controls, while
Kendall Leonard was solid on defense with four caused turnovers and two ground balls.
Aubrey Fixen had a brilliant game in goal, finishing with 14 saves which is third in the Eagles' single-game rankings.
The Eagles continue the seven-game home stand on Wednesday when they host Flagler at 7 p.m.
