DAYTONA BEACH, Florida -
Max Law delivered the 50th walk-off victory in Sliwa Stadium history for the Embry-Riddle baseball team on Saturday, as the Eagles salvaged the series finale against the Valdosta State Blazers, 1-0 in 11 innings. ERAU (1-2) won a game that was dominated by the pitching staffs and defenses, thanks to coach
Randy Stegall's decision to have Law pull a bunt attempt back with two men on and no outs in the 11th, and Law chopped a Zach Henderson pitch into the ground and over the head of VSU's charging first baseman to score
Alex Britton from second, giving the Blue and Gold its first win since March of 2020.
VSU (2-1) stranded 10 runners on the bases in the contest as the Eagle pitching quintet of
Conner Dunnam,
Casey Keller,
Tyler Stufano,
Garner Spoljaric, and
Joe Balsam held the Blazer offense in check for 11 innings. Eagle hurlers racked up seven strikeouts, and surrendered just five hits, and four walks.
Dunnam started on the bump for the Eagles and impressed in his ERAU debut, going 5.2 innings and giving up just two hits to the Blazers while fanning five. He stranded a runner at third in the first inning by striking out EJ Doskow, and that set the tone for the rest of his outing, as he wouldn't allow another runner to get into scoring position until the sixth when he was relieved by Keller.
The Eagle offense was similarly stumped by VSU starter Kevin Tomas, managing just three hits and no walks against him through five innings. ERAU threatened in both the first and third frames when Law got to third, but neither time could bring him in and score the first run of the game.
Tied at 0-0 in the sixth, Dunnam left for Keller with two men on and two outs. Keller entered and, despite allowing a single that loaded the bases, got a harmless ground ball that
Josh Reynolds at first handled without issue to retire the side.
Spoljaric took over for Stufano in the top of the seventh and escaped a two-on, one-out jam with a line out and ground out, and moved through the eighth inning without damage.
In the top of the ninth
Joe Balsam entered for his season debut, working around a leadoff walk by coaxing a popped up bunt attempt and then a line out double play that was turned beautifully by Law at short.
ERAU wasted a leadoff walk in the bottom of the ninth, and neither team did much in the 10th.
After Balsam set down the Blazers in order in the top of the 11th, the Eagles got the Sliwa magic rolling with a single to left off of closer Henderson, via Britton, to start the bottom of the inning.
Andrew Martinez placed a perfect sacrifice bunt attempt down the third base line, and his speed to first was enough for him to beat out the throw from Henderson who fielded the ball.
With Britton at second, and Martinez at first, Law showed bunt on the first pitch he saw from Henderson, fouling it off, but on the 0-1 pitch, Law pulled the bat back and shot the pitch into the ground and then the bounce carried the ball over the head of Doskow the charging first baseman to score Britton easily from second.
The 50th walk-off in Sliwa history extends ERAU's streak of at least one walk-off in every contested season since 2001.
Law finished 3-for-5, while Britton collected two hits. Balsam (1-0) got the win in three innings of relief.
The Eagles host Tusculum on Monday, Feb. 7 at 2 p.m. in their final home game until the end of the month.
