DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle men's tennis team stumbled against Wayne State on Monday, falling to the 21
st-ranked Warriors 4-3 at the Crotty Tennis Complex. The Eagles are now 9-3 on the year, while Wayne State improves to 11-3.
The Warriors took an early lead after sweeping all three doubles matches to go up 1-0. The clinching doubles point came at the No. 2 spot where Dom Spicer and Luke Laws held off
Lukas Schneider and
Michele Iftimie 7-5.
The Warriors extended their lead to 3-0 when Cedric Drenth topped Schneider (6-2, 6-3) and Spicer bested
Juan Ortiz Couder (6-1, 6-2).
Fernando Alonso got the Eagles' first point of the day with a 7-6 (5), 6-0 win over Laws on court six. The Eagles won the first sets on courts two and three, but Ben Lakeman was able to secure the clinching point on court five by holding off
Alvaro Diaz Rodrigo 6-3, 7-5.
The last two matches off the court went to the Eagles as
Alexis Guedy defeated Niklas Karcz 6-4, 6-3 and Iftimie outlasted Daniel Grey 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (5).
The Eagles' next match will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday against Eastern Florida State College.
