Canes Walk it Off Against Baseball in 11 Innings

AMERICUS, Georgia - The Embry-Riddle baseball team fell to 20-20 on the season thanks to a walk-off walk by the Georgia Southwestern Canes (18-22) in 11 innings. ERAU was out-hit 18-9, and the Cane defense committed five errors, but the Eagles couldn't take advantage, falling 10-9 on the road.

The Eagles jumped on GSW starter Aaron Wainright from the jump, getting back-to-back walks to start the game from Andrew Martinez and Daniel Trillo. Jeremy Kennedy-Davis got his first hit of the night in the next at-bat, driving in Martinez, and after a wild pitch, Robert Post brought in the second Eagle run with an RBI groundout. Zach Coldsnow accounted for the third run of the inning with a single to left, scoring Kennedy-Davis as ERAU enjoyed a 3-0 lead.

Tristan Harley faced the minimum in the home first, and the Eagles added a run to their cushion in the second when Kennedy-Davis doubled home Trillo after Trillo had reached on an error.

The Canes chased Harley from the game in the bottom of the second, scoring three runs and loading the bases, but Casey Keller got an infield pop up to end the threat and keep ERAU's lead intact.

Embry-Riddle hung another crooked number in the third as Kevin Vittoria, Martinez and Trillo all registered RBIs and the Eagle lead increased to 7-3.

However, that would be the last runs the Eagles would score for a while, and the home team had a huge inning in the fifth, scoring five runs on seven hits while sending 10 batters to the plate, going through two Eagle pitchers and taking an 8-7 lead.

The visitors went quietly in the sixth, but Post got things started in the seventh with a single, moving to second and then third in the next two at-bats before scoring on a Coldsnow single to center. Coldsnow moved around the bases before scoring the go-ahead run on a Hoffman infield single, giving ERAU a 9-8 lead.

The hosts were able to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth , putting runners at first and second with two outs before a single that just got over Nick Hoffman's glove at second to bring in the lead runner.

Garner Spoljaric, who finished the eighth on the mound for the Blue and Gold, threw a scoreless ninth and then did the same in the 10th, stranding the potential game-winning run at second.

The Eagles got Josh Reynolds to second with one out in the top of the 11th, but both of the next two batters struck out swinging.

GSW got a leadoff single before a hit batter put two Canes on with no outs in the last of the 11th. A single to center loaded the bases and Spoljaric, with nowhere to put the batter, walked in the go-ahead run after a lengthy at-bat

Spoljaric (2-3) took the loss, throwing the final 2.2 innings. Seven Eagle pitchers saw action in the game.

The Eagles play their final nine games against SSC competition, beginning this weekend against Saint Leo on the road.
