ST. AUGUSTINE, Florida - Mother Nature provided the lightning, and
Josh Reynolds provided the thunder on Tuesday night, blasting a grand slam in the top of the ninth inning to send the Embry-Riddle baseball team to a 10-6 comeback win over Flagler at Drysdale Field following a 90-plus minute delay before the game began. The Eagles (15-17) led 5-0, but saw the Saints (16-19) score six unanswered runs, including three in the bottom of the eighth, to take a 6-5 lead. After the Eagles tied the game with one out, the Blue and Gold went on to load the bases in front of Reynolds, and the sophomore from Palatka, Florida delivered the Eagles' first grand slam since April 14, 2018, obliterating a pitch to straightaway center and propelling ERAU to their first road win against the Saints since 2017.
Despite the offensive fireworks late,Â
John Barone and FC's Ryan Franklin settled into a pitcher's duel through the first four innings, neither starter allowing the opposing offense much in the way of baserunners. But that changed in the Eagle fifth.
Reynolds started the fifth inning with a walk, and after
Matthew Coker collected a one-out single,
Daniel Trillo walked to load the bases.
Andrew Martinez lifted an 0-2 pitch to left center, deep enough to score Reynolds and give the Blue and Gold a 1-0 lead. An intentional walk to
Zach Coldsnow backfired for Flagler after
Jeremy Kennedy-Davis earned a walk himself, making it 2-0, and then the big blow of the frame came when
Robert Post singled through the right side of the infield, scoring two more ERAU runs.
Garrett Bogart accounted for the final run of the frame for the Eagles with a base hit to center, scoring Kennedy-Davis.
Barone worked a scoreless home-half of the fifth, but got into a spot of trouble in the sixth, and was relieved by
Casey Keller with the bases loaded and two outs recorded. Keller surrendered a single to center that brought in two Saint runs, but was able to limit the damage to just those two scores, sending the contest to the seventh.
Embry-Riddle threatened to add some insurance in the seventh, but the Eagles stranded a pair, and the Saints crept closer with a single run in inning on a sac fly.
The bottom of the eighth was not kind to Eagle relievers as
Tyler Stufano couldn't record an out, and
Joe Balsam was called upon to try and put out the fire. A sac bunt that did not lead to an out was followed by a single through the infield that tied the game before an RBI groundout from the Saints put them on top 6-5. Balsam did get the next two outs to keep the Eagle deficit at just one run.
The ninth rally started with a Trillo single and Coldsnow walk. A wild pitch moved both runners up a base and the Saints once again elected to intentionally walk an Eagle, this time it was Kennedy-Davis. Post worked a full count before tying the game with ERAU's second bases-loaded walk of the night, but the Saints were on the verge of getting out of the inning tied after a foul out from Bogart for the second out. Reynolds stepped into the box and took a strike before three straight pitches went for balls, the last of which caused the Saint pitcher, Kenny Morgan to pause in discomfort before returning to the mound. Morgan's next pitch to Reynolds didn't land for a long time, finally coming to rest over the fence in center.
Balsam worked around a one-out hit by pitch in the bottom of the ninth to secure the win. He moved to 3-0 on the year with the victory.
Reynolds led the way with his four RBIs and two runs scored, while Post finished 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs. ERAU drew 10 walks in the contest.
Embry-Riddle travels to Boca Raton to take on Lynn this weekend, beginning with a 3 p.m. game on Friday and a 12 p.m. twin bill on Saturday.
