Softball Wins Final Regular-Season Game Against Barry

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle softball team gave Eagle moms the gift of victory in the final regular season game of the 2022 season on Sunday as Embry-Riddle shutout Barry 2-0 on Mother's Day. In the all-time series, the Eagles (28-16, 19-11 Sunshine State Conference) improved to 10-8 over the Buccaneers (29-22, 16-14 SSC).

The two SSC co-leaders in wins went head-to-head as Kelsi Collins faced off against Maci Barnhart.

Embry-Riddle got to Barry's starter with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning just like in game two of the series on Saturday. Lia Johnson started the contest with a leadoff single to third and then broke the program's single-season stolen base record when she swiped second, her 32nd of the year. A groundout by ReAnne Drayton brought Johnson home soon after for the first run.

Maggie Scott mimicked her fellow outfielder with a base hit and stolen base to move into scoring position with two outs. Karina Ortiz-Munoz sent a slow-roller up the middle to give Scott enough time to race to the plate for a 2-0 advantage.

Meanwhile, Collins was settled in from the start, striking out four batters in the first two innings. However, Barry threatened in almost every frame by putting a runner in scoring position in five of the seven innings played.

The Eagles got into trouble In the sixth when the Buccaneers had the tying run on base with no outs. Kelsey Kressler made an outstanding split-second catch on a line drive for the first out. The next batter sent a bouncing ball to Collins, who knocked it down and got the force out at third. Now with two outs, Collins struck out the following Barry batter to end the threat.

Scott was perfect at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a run. Ortiz-Munoz also picked up a pair of hits in three at-bats along with an RBI.

Collins (20-8) ends the season as the SSC's leader in wins after shutting out Barry on six hits. It's also the second-most wins by an Eagle in a single season in program history. Her nine strikeouts in the game tied her career high and put her third on the program's single-season strikeout list with 145 in 2022.

With no conference tournament, Embry-Riddle now waits to see if it is one of the eight teams selected to compete in the NCAA II South Regional. In the most recent regional rankings released on May 1, the Eagles were sixth on the list. The selection show is scheduled for Monday, May 9 at 10 a.m. on NCAA.com.
