Women’s Soccer Secures 3-1 Victory Against Ashland in Season Opener

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.- The Embry-Riddle women's soccer team secured its first win to kick off the 2022 season with a 3-1 defeat of Ashland, Thursday at the Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium. The win gave Head Coach Liam McIlhatton his first career victory in his first contest as the Blue and Gold's leader.

The Eagles dominated possession in the first half, leaving Ashland to chase the majority of the first 45 minutes. Ashland allowed just 12 goals in 2021 but ERAU scored three goals on the visitors in the first half. Junior Isabelle Navren tallied the first goal for the Eagles in the 10th minute with an assist from senior Saba Amiri, giving the Blue & Gold an early lead in the match. The Eagles' success continued when sophomore Grace Foyer struck the ball from 20 yards out and scored, giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead in the 15th minute.

ERAU continued to swing the ball from left to right, leaving Ashland unable to regain possession. Junior Marie Myhrvold Seim took the ball off a defender's foot, powered through the two center backs and scored the Eagles' third goal of the match, creating a 3-0 lead.

Early in the second half, Ashland got their second shot on goal at ERAU's netminder sophomore Oona Jokinen who initially made a great save but was unable to stop the rebound, giving Ashland their only goal of the game.

Both teams combined for a total of 16 shots at the end of the 90 minutes, but ERAU held on to their 3-1 victory, giving them their first win of regular season play. The win gives the Eagles a confidence boost heading into their game on the road at 1 p.m. in Winter Park against Findlay on Saturday.
