PEMBROKE, N.C. – The Embry-Riddle women's volleyball team posted a 1-1 ledger to close out play at the UNC Pembroke Invitational, Saturday at the Braves' Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. The Eagles bested East Stroudsburg 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-13), but dropped a hard-fought 3-2 (25-18, 22-25, 25-18, 22-25, 13-15) decision to host UNCP.
The Eagles are now 6-2 on the year and will turn their attention to Sunshine State Conference play which begins on Thursday with a 7 p.m. road match at Florida Tech.
Embry-Riddle vs. East Stroudsburg
Jenna Bishop had a career performance in the first match of the day, leading the Blue and Gold to a 3-0 defeat of East Stroudsburg. The Eagles had a season-best .368 attacking percentage for the match led by Bishop's career-best 14 kills. Bishop also had a pair of blocks (1 BS, 1BA) to finish with a career-high 15.5 points.
Defensively,
Tamzen Wilson and
Cameron Gilleland recorded a match-high 11 digs apiece.
Jaden McBride matched Gilleland's nine kills and totaled 10 digs as the Eagles held the Warriors to a .178 hitting percentage in Saturday's match.
East Stroudsburg struck first in the first set, but the Eagles answered with five points in a row to go up 5-1 and extended the lead to 14-7 on a Bishop kill. ERAU maintained a seven-point cushion throughout much of the set and took the opening frame 25-17.
The Eagles improved on a .316 hitting percentage in the first set to .400 in the second paced by five kills apiece from Bishop and McBride. The Eagles went up 2-0 to open the set, but a 4-0 run allowed the Warriors to take an 11-10 lead. ERAU responded with a 7-1 surge and led 19-13 after a kill by
Isabella Rujano. ESU narrowed the gap to three (22-19), but the Eagles held off a late Warrior effort to win the set 25-21.
The third set saw the Eagles' hitting percentage tick up to .409. Much like the second frame, the Eagles used an early run to claim the lead. The Eagles held a commanding 16-10 leading when
Hunter Ackermann entered the game to serve. The sophomore further extended the lead as her first action of the weekend yielded a career-best two service aces in three tries, widening the gap to 19-10. The Warriors had no answer for the Eagle offense and ERAU completed the sweep with a 25-13 win in the third.
Embry-Riddle vs. UNC Pembroke
The Eagles led 2-1 in their final match of the tournament, but host UNC Pembroke rallied late for a five-set win to even the season series record between the two teams at one win each.
The Eagles had four players with double-digit kills, including
Constanza Silva and
Jaden McBride, who had 14 kills each, and
Cameron Gilleland and
Jenna Bishop who had 13 and 11 kills, respectively. Her 14-kill total was a career-best for Silva, while McBride (15 digs) and Gilleland (13 digs) closed out the tournament with a double-double each.
The Eagles went up 9-5 to open the first set and closed out the frame with kills by Silva,
Jenna Bishop and Gilleland to take a one-set lead (25-18).
The Braves edged the Eagles 25-22 in the second set and were up 16-15 in the third. A kill by
Sierra Scanlan tied the set a sparked a 10-2 Eagle run that ended with four unanswered scores and gave ERAU a 25-18 win in the third.
The fourth set went down to the wire. The score was tied six times in the set and at 13-13, UNCP used a 3-0 spurt to take the lead and did not relinquish it, forcing a fifth set with a 25-22 win in the fourth.
After falling behind to start the fifth set, the Eagles rallied, and a 5-0 run helped ERAU overtake the Braves 13-10, prompting a UNCP timeout. The pause in play proved beneficial for the Braves as they finished on a 5-0 run to clinch the win, 15-13.
