Volleyball Stumbles Against Florida Southern

LAKELAND, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle volleyball team dropped it's second straight match for the first time this season as the Eagles were swept by Florida Southern on Friday night.

FSC (11-6, 6-5 Sunshine State Conference) used the home court advantage to claim the opening six points and later led 8-2. The Eagles (12-5, 6-3 SSC) battled back, though, by taking the next three. That run was capped off by a Tamzen Wilson dig that turned into a kill. The libero barely got her hands underneath a strong Moccasins spike. The ball still possessed a hefty amount of momentum and floated back over to FSC's side. Though the home team had an ample amount of time to settle underneath the ball, the Mocs allowed it to land with the belief that it would strike the court out of bounds, but the ball landed on the line for a Blue and Gold point. Embry-Riddle did get within two points at 10-8, but FSC stretched its lead from there on out to win set one 25-13.

ERAU took its first lead of the match in the second set with a 4-3 lead. Sadly, it was short lived as FSC pushed the Blue and Gold down by as many as seven points (16-9) with an 8-1 spurt and went up two sets to none with the 25-18 set two win. The good news was Jaden McBride came alive as the set progressed. After missing ERAU's last match, the team's top attacker had just one kill at the end of set one but successfully struck four more times in set two.

The Eagles performed much better defensively in set three, holding the Mocs to .159 attacking while they hit .188. Isabella Rujano and Kailey Hrbek recorded Embry-Riddle's first block of the match to aid the squad in racing out to a 5-1 lead to begin the set. FSC then responded with four consecutive tallies to even the score at 5-5. The Mocs slowly inched ahead, but a 3-0 run allowed the Eagles to once again tie the set at 16 points each.

The two squads went back and forth with neither able to gain more than two points of separation, but that's all FSC needed to win the set 25-23 to sweep ERAU.

McBride accumulated a team-high 10 kills, moving her into ninth on the program's all-time kills list with 1,035. Grace Datil led the squad in assists (18), Gabriela Pagan recorded the most digs (8), and Hrbek was the top blocker with four rejections.

The Eagles travel to play SSC-leading No. 3 Tampa on Saturday at 4 p.m. before heading into next week's South Region Crossover.
