Volleyball Handles Palm Beach Atlantic in Straight Sets

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle volleyball team pushed its winning streak to five matches on Saturday with a 3-0 win over Palm Beach Atlantic. The victory allowed the Eagles (17-6, 8-4 Sunshine State Conference) to complete the season sweep of the Sailfish (9-12, 3-9 SSC) after beating PBA in three sets back on Sept. 22. It was also ERAU's seventh win in the last eight meetings in the all-time series.

Embry-Riddle outhit Palm Beach Atlantic .226 to .118 and held a significant 10-4 edge in blocks.

Set one was neck-and-neck about halfway through with the Sailfish leading 10-9. At that point, the Eagles scored five straight with two Kailey Hrbek kills and a pair of Grace Datil aces. It was the start of a 10-2 stretch that put the Blue and Gold firmly in the lead at 19-12, enough to eventually secure the first set 25-19.

The second set saw PBA take an early 5-3 lead when Jaden McBride used back-to-back aces to help the home squad respond to go up 6-5. PBA fought back by taking three of the next four rallies, and both sides traded blows until the Sailfish held a slim 14-13 advantage. The Eagles then scored five straight points to lead 18-14. However, the advantage was short-lived as Palm Beach Atlantic claimed eight of the following 10 points to push ERAU down 22-20 and force a timeout.

Out of the break, blocks from Hrbek, McBride, and Cameron Gilleland ignited the ICI Center to start a 5-1 spurt that allowed the Blue and Gold to swipe the set from the Sailfish 25-23.

Set three was another nail-biter. Both squads traded four-point streaks to tie it at 7-7. Later on with the score 22-21 in favor of PBA, Embry-Riddle emptied the tank with a 4-1 run to win the set 25-23 and the match.

McBride earned a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs. Isabella Rujano followed right behind with 10 successful spikes. Devyn Petrowski was the top setter with 18 assists to Datil's 15. Gilleland added 15 digs to go with eight kills while Gabriela Pagan accumulated 11 digs. Hrbek and Dana Gibbons tied for the team lead in blocks with four each.

Also of note, Petrwoski moved into 10th on the program's all-time assists lists with 926.

The Eagles hit the road again for three matches next week beginning with a contest at Florida Tech on Tuesday, Oct. 31 at 7 p.m.
