FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Junior
Sarah Napoli erupted for a career-high 21 points to lead the Embry-Riddle women's basketball team to an 88-74 victory over Montevallo on the first day of the GSC/SSC Crossover Classic on Friday. The Eagles are now 8-1 in season openers with their first win of the 2023-24 campaign.
Napoli came off the bench to register her 21-point tally, eclipsing her previous career-best total of nine points. She was 7-of-8 from the field with all seven scores coming from behind the three-point line and her seven treys makes her Embry-Riddle's single-game three-point record holder.
Napoli was one of four Eagle players who scored in double figures.
Madyson Jean-Louis was also 7-of-8 from the field for 16 total points. Keturah Bablabyekkubo added 13 points while
Mary Lengemann came of the bench for a 10-point output, which was also a career-best.
After an even first quarter that led to an 18-18 tie after the first 10 minutes, the Blue and Gold started the second frame on a 17-3 run to open a 35-21 lead. The Eagles shot 66.7 percent (8-12) from the field, including a 6-for-6 shooting clip by Napoli, and heading into the halftime break, Embry-Riddle led 48-33.
The third quarter was close with the Eagles edging the Falcons 23-21. Jean-Louis took over on the offensive end scoring eight points on 3-of-3 shooting from the field. ERAU extended its lead to a many as 18 points before closing out the period up 71-54.
While Montevallo managed to outscore the Eagles by three points (20-17) in the fourth quarter, the Falcons were unable to further cut into the Eagle lead, resulting in the 14-point victory for ERAU.
The Eagles are back in action at 2 p.m. on Saturday to close out play in the two-day tournament against Auburn Montgomery.
