ATLANTA, Ga. – The Embry-Riddle men's basketball team earned its first win of the season on Saturday defeating host Morehouse 84-69 on the final day of the South Region Crossover. The Eagles will take a 1-1 record into their home opener on Monday when they host Spring Hill at the ICI Center at 6 p.m.
The Eagles took control of the game early on besting the Maroon Tigers 19-16 on the boards and outscoring the home team 26-7 in the first 10 minutes of action. Embry-Riddle continued to pressure the Maroon Tigers and at the end of the first half, the lead had swelled to 42-26.
The second half saw the Blue and Gold improve their field goal shooting from 38.9 percent (14-of-36) in the first half to 60.7 percent (17-of-28) in the second. Morehouse also improved its shooting performance and behind the offense of Damion Mitchell, who had a game-high 25 points, the Maroon Tigers were able to cut the lead to 10 points midway through the half.
The Eagles weathered the storm and rallied to put together a 6-0 run that served to quiet the Morehouse offense, which led to the Eagles' 15-point win.
Dru Nickson led the offense for Embry-Riddle with 21 points which included a perfect 6-for-6 night at the free throw line in addition to six rebounds and six assists.
Danny Sully registered the game's only double-double with 12 points and a game-high 10 boards. Starters
Cameron Shockley-Okeke and
Malcolm Whitlow scored 12 and 10 points, respectively, while
Jon Alessandro added 11 points off the bench.
