Volleyball Fights Off Multiple Match Points to Defeat Rollins in Five Sets

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Facing match points in both the fourth and fifth sets, the Embry-Riddle volleyball team managed to fight back and beat Rollins 3-2 on Tuesday night. It was just the second time this season the Eagles were down two sets to one and managed to come out on top.

The win moves the Eagles to 14-2 all-time against the Tars, including a 7-1 record at home. Embry-Riddle has now won 11 straight against Rollins, dating back to 2017, and seven in a row inside the ICI Center.

ERAU (22-7, 13-5 Sunshine State Conference) was marred by attacking woes in the second and third sets, hitting .030 and .023 to fall behind. However, the Eagles cleaned up their play and hit .400 in the fourth set that saw the Tars (14-15, 6-12 SSC) grab a 25-24 lead. At match point, Embry-Riddle was able to fend off Rollins by taking four of the last five points to force a fifth set that the home team won 18-16.

It was a strong start to the match by ERAU as the Eagles used aces from Grace Datil and Cameron Gilleland to lead early 4-1. From there, Rollins used a 5-1 run with kills from four different Tars to take a 6-5 lead. Embry-Riddle strung together four and five point streaks, with the help of four Rollins miscues, to gain a commanding 19-15 lead. That advantage held up until the end - a 25-21 opening set win.

Set two was close early on with a 6-6 tie, but things got out of hand from there. Rollins went on a 12-2 run that included eight unanswered points to jump out in front 16-7, a deficit too large for ERAU to overcome. The Tars took set two 25-15.

A quick start to set three once again put Rollins ahead. A 6-1 run gave the Tars a three point lead at 7-3. The Eagles answered with three kills to go on a 4-1 spurt, but Rollins followed that up with six consecutive points to move back ahead 14-8. The deficit reached double digits for the Eagles at 21-11 when Embry-Riddle awakened to piece together a pair of four-point runs to get within four at 23-19, but Rollins closed out the set by taking the final two points.

Things looked bleak when the Tars took four of the first five points in set four. The Eagles were able to hastily tie the set at 6-6 and stayed within at least three points of Rollins for the remainder of the set. Later on when the score was tied 14-14, the two squads continued to trade blows back and forth, but three successful spikes from Jaden McBride allowed ERAU to reach set point at 24-22. However, The Tars scored three straight to then serve for match point (26-25), but the Blue and Gold settled in and stole four of the final five points to take set four 28-26, which was capped off with an ace by Gilleland.

The home crowd was roaring as ERAU claimed the first three points of set five. The lead was maintained at 6-3 when four Eagle errors set Rollins on a 5-1 run to put the Tars up 8-7. From there, neither team could score consecutive points, and eventually the set was tied at 14-14. Rollins grabbed the next point to earn yet another opportunity at match point, but Gilleland thwarted the visitor's plans with a kill to tie the set. Again, Rollins went ahead 16-15, but the result was still the same. Gilleland unloaded on a ball to tie the score in the next rally, and she later secured the winning point as the Eagles closed the match out on a 3-0 run to win set five 18-16.

Though ERAU struggled offensively with a .147 hit percentage, the Eagles did lead the Tars in blocks 12-11 and aces 8-6.

McBride was the only member of the Blue and Gold to earn a double-double with a team-high 16 kills and 14 digs. Gilleland and Isabella Rujano each chipped in 13 kills. Datil ended the match with 25 assists while Devyn Petrowski successfully set 22 Eagle kills. Dana Gibbons and Kailey Hrbek tied for the most blocks on the team with six, and Gabriela Pagan recorded 14 digs.

The homestand continues for Embry-Riddle as the Eagles host SSC-leading No. 3 Tampa for Bring Your Team Night on Thursday at 7 p.m.
