No. 22 Women's Basketball Dominates Panthers 85-59

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The No. 22 Embry-Riddle women's basketball team made a single-game program record 31 free throws to soundly defeat Florida Tech 85-59 on Friday night inside the ICI Center. Laurie Satchell had a career game with a personal-best 18 points and eight rebounds while Eva Zaragoza contributed a career-best 18 points to go with three boards.

The win evened the all-time series between ERAU and FIT at 7-7 though the Eagles have now won three of the previous four meetings.

Embry-Riddle (7-1, 2-0 Sunshine State Conference) made 47 percent of its shots and held Florida Tech (3-9, 0-3 SSC) to just 35 percent from the floor. Part of the reason ERAU was able to convert a high percentage of its shots was because 40 of the team's points were from attempts inside the paint. The Eagles also controlled the boards 43-22 and almost had as many offensive rebounds (19) as the Panthers had total rebounds.

Zaragoza was on fire to start the game, knocking down a pair of long balls in the first 1:46 of the contest to start ERAU with a 6-0 advantage. Defensively, the Eagles were in top form, holding Florida Tech to just one successful shot over its first six attempts.

With 5:21 left in the first quarter, Keturah Balabyekkubo picked up her first block of the season when she swatted a potential Panther layup away to keep the Eagles' lead at 10-5. Though Florida Tech trimmed its deficit to two points, Zaragoza hit four free throws to end the period on a 4-0 run by the Blue and Gold, making it a 25-18 Eagle lead.

Zaragoza already reached double figures in the first quarter with 10 points, but ERAU's defense also did a spectacular job preventing high-percentage looks from up close. The Eagles allowed only two points inside the paint in the first 10 minutes.

Three fouls in a 40-second span in the second quarter allowed Florida Tech to chip into Embry-Riddle's lead. Stifling defense by the Panthers forced five Blue and Gold turnovers in the first three minutes of the quarter, and once again the Eagles' lead was a mere two points at 27-25 with seven minutes to go after a pair of lay-ins from FIT.

From there, ERAU went on a 10-3 run with three consecutive layups to launch ahead by nine at 37-28 with 2:54 left on the clock. Included in that was a relentless possession inside the paint that saw gritty offensive rebounds from Laurie Satchell and Madyson Jean-Louis, which ended with a lay-in by the latter. The Eagles made each of their final four shots to enter the break up 11 points at 44-33.

It was an all-around impressive first half as ERAU shot 54 percent compared to the Panthers' 36 percent and outrebounded FIT 21-11.

That momentum carried over into the third quarter when Embry-Riddle converted on its first three attempts to make it seven straight successful shots and vault the lead up to 16 at 53-37 just two minutes into the second half. For a three-and-a-half-minute span beginning with 4:43 left in the quarter, neither team made a shot yet both combined for 10 points, all of which were from the charity stripe.

ERAU forced FIT to miss five of its final six shots to carry a 65-51 lead into the final period of play.

Satchell took control at the start of the fourth quarter with two layups and a free throw in the opening 1:41 of the period, and the Eagles dominated the Panthers for the final 10 minutes of the contest, starting the quarter on a 13-2 run and outscoring FIT 20-8.

Along with Satchell and Zaragoza, three other Eagles reached double digits in the point column including Jean-Louis (15), Mary Lengemann (11), and Balabyekkubo (10). Kailey Turpening added six rebounds, a team-high seven assists, and two steals while Chandler Brooks earned her first career block.
