DAYTONA BEACH, Florida - The Embry-Riddle baseball team celebrated Super Bowl Sunday at Sliwa Stadium by earning the program's 500th all-time win at their home park. The Eagles downed Auburn Montgomery (1-7) 3-2, getting great pitching performance from both
Dillon Moran and
Joe Balsam, while
Timo Aracena came through clutch for the Eagles with a late two-run double.
The Eagles (4-3), playing as the visitors in their final game of the GSC/SSC Clash, went in front 1-0 in the second inning when
Chase Bruno brought home
Alex Britton all the way from first base with a ringing double to the right center gap.
The one run was all ERAU could manage against AUM until the seventh, but it was enough as Moran cruised through most of the first five innings.
The Eagles threatened in the fourth with runners at first and second, but a fly out ended the frame. Moran then returned the favor in the next half-inning, stranding two Warhawks on the bases.
Balsam relieved Moran with two outs in the sixth, needing just two pitches to get the final out of the inning.
Britton started the seventh with a double down the right field line, and after he moved to third on a ground out,
Dylan Brazil walked before stealing second base. The Warhawks recorded two outs, but Aracena came through with a two-out, two-RBI double to right, making it 3-0 and giving the Eagles some much needed breathing room.
Balsam faced some trouble in the eighth, but was able to escape without any damage, but the Warhawks again put together a rally in the ninth, scoring twice and putting two other runners on base with just one out. However, Balsam stood firm, striking the next batter out before inducing a weak grounder to short that ended the game.
Moran (1-0) got the win in 5.2 shutout innings, striking out four. Balsam grabbed his first save of the year in 3.1 innings, fanning five.
Embry-Riddle begins Sunshine State Conference play next weekend, taking on Barry in Miami Shores. First pitch on Friday night is set for 6 p.m. from Feinbloom Field.
