Softball Wins Opening SSC Series with Doubleheader Sweep of Rollins on Saturday

WINTER PARK, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle softball team shook off the series-opening loss from Friday and took both games against Rollins on Saturday at the Rollins Softball Stadium. A three-run surge in the sixth of game one propelled ERAU to a 5-3 win. In the second game, the Eagles (6-3) earned their first shutout of the season by holding the Tars (5-5) to just six hits in the 2-0 victory.

Embry-Riddle improves to 12-9 all-time against Rollins and 6-3 on the road. The Eagles have won every three-game series against the Tars and have swept every road doubleheader the two programs have played against each other. It's also the fifth time ERAU prevented Rollins from scoring in a game and third time in the last two years.

Head Coach Kelsi Dunne Diaz now sits at 197 wins since taking over the program prior to the 2015 season. With six games on the schedule next week, she has a high chance of reaching the 200-win mark over the next seven days.

GAME 1 | Embry-Riddle - 5, Rollins - 3

After needing five innings to break into the scoring column yesterday, the first run came much sooner on Saturday when Rollins used a leadoff double, stolen base, and sacrifice fly to put the Eagles down 1-0 after the first inning.

With relatively little action in the second and third innings, the score remained the same into the fourth. Emma Wood increased her reached-base streak to six games with a walk to start the inning and Delaney Morgan followed with a single. Karina Ortiz-Munoz came up clutch again with a groundball up the middle. The Tars' second baseman dove to stop the ball and tried to flip it to the shortstop on second base for the force out, but her toss was late and Morgan was ruled safe. Pinch runner Leah Oberkehr scored from second on the play to tie the game. Next up, Lauren Latoria mashed a double down the left line to give the Eagles' their first lead of the season when Morgan touched home.

Rollins threatened to tie the contest in the bottom of the fourth with two runners in scoring position, but starting pitcher Shelby Morse picked up a clutch strikeout to preserve the lead.

However, the Tars loaded the bases with no outs in the following frame and evened up the score with their second sacrifice fly of the game.

A strong sixth inning propelled ERAU back ahead. With two on and one out, Raissa Bianco perfectly laid down a squeeze bunt that rolled about 10 feet away from home on the right side and allowed Morgan score again to put Embry-Riddle up 3-2. Two more runners came home on miscues by the Tars defense. A wild pitch advanced Eagles to second and third. Serenity Jaenichen then scored on a passed ball and Bianco moved to third. Rollins' catcher went to retrieve the ball and tossed it back to the pitcher. Now with the ball, the pitcher turned around and walked toward the circle, leaving home uncovered. Bianco realized this and sprinted to the plate for the Eagles' fifth run of the game.

Rollins did get a run back in the bottom of the sixth, but Bianco made an impressive diving stop at the hot corner to end the inning with the score at 5-3 in favor of ERAU. A quiet seventh kept the run column stagnant, and the Eagles evened the series against the Tars by taking the first game of the doubleheader.

Both Isabelle Bonn and Latoria recorded season-highs in hits with two in three at-bats while Morgan went 1-for-2 with a team-leading two runs.

Morse (1-3) earned her first career win after holding Rollins to three runs on seven hits and a walk with a season-best five strikeouts, which was also a single-game team best this year.

GAME 2 | Embry-Riddle - 2, Rollins - 0

Rollins attempted to mimic its start from game one. The Tars had a runner on third with one out when the batter sent a high fly ball to shallow right. Wood caught the ball and immediately chucked it to home plate because the runner on third tagged up and was running home. The throw was so strong that when it reached Bonn's glove, the runner was only three quarters of the way down the third base line and was easily tagged out.

Aycock earned a double play of her own in the second when a Tar lined out to the second baseman. She proceeded to step on second base for the second out of the play and third of the inning.

Self-inflicted wounds by Rollins in the third allowed Embry-Riddle to jump up 2-0. Mahaliyah Sandridge was pegged by a pitch to start the inning. Two batters later, Ortiz-Munoz received a base on balls. Both runners stole a base to put two Eagles in scoring position. Bianco then sent a grounder to the right side of the infield. The pitcher dropped to the dirt to field it and threw it to first, but the first baseman was unable to handle the throw. The ball deflected off of her which allowed both Sandridge and Ortiz-Munoz to race home.

Wood almost increased the Eagle lead in the fifth when she smoked a ball out to left, but a strong gust killed its momentum and kept it inside the park. The insurance wasn't necessary, thoough, because the ERAU defense held strong to secure the win.

Sandridge, Morgan and Bonn each had a hit for the Blue and Gold. Mallory Kinahan (3-0) remained undefeated with her fifth-career complete-game shutout, which is tied for the sixth most in program history with Kelsi Collins. She only allowed six hits and one walk with three strikeouts. It was also her 22nd career start, moving her into eighth all time past Lisa Hop.

Also of note, Ortiz-Munoz jumped into ninth on the program's all-time putouts list, just one ahead of Gabriella Obia at 298 putouts.

Next week is packed full of action for ERAU as the Eagles head up to No. 10 Valdosta State for a doubleheader on Thursday, Feb. 23 at 5 p.m. and then participate in the NFCA DII Leadoff Classic on Feb. 24-25.
