DAYTONA BEACH, Florida - The Saint Leo Lions completed the weekend series sweep of the Embry-Riddle baseball team on Sunday, downing ERAU 12-1. The Lions (14-10, 5-4 SSC) outscored the Eagles (11-12, 2-7 SSC) 38-2 in their three-game Sunshine State Conference series.
Dillon Moran (1-3) took the ball for ERAU, and was really good for the Eagles, until a rough sixth inning derailed his and the Eagles' hopes. A four-run sixth, with all four runs coming with two outs, took a 2-1 SLU lead out to 6-1, and the Blue and Gold never could recover.
ERAU had a chance to score first in the bottom of the first when
Alex Britton reached on an error, ending up at third with two outs, but a fly out to left center for the final out in the inning sent the Eagles back into the field without a run.
The visitors struck for two runs in the third off of Moran, both coming with two outs recorded. A walk, followed by a hit by pitch put two runners on with two away, and then a ball hit to right that was misjudged by ERAU's right fielder, dropped in for a base hit, scoring the first run of the game for SLU. The Lions followed with a single up the middle for a 2-0 lead.
Robert Post ended ERAU's 18-inning offensive scoreless streak when he singled in
Kevin Vittoria in the bottom of the fifth. Vittoria had doubled with one out and scored on Post's base hit down the right field line, but that's all the Eagles would get as Saint Leo starter Evan Wolf got the final two outs in the frame.
The big blow came in the top of the sixth after Moran struck out the first two batters he faced. Two singles, followed by a base on balls, loaded the bags for Saint Leo, and after a meeting on the mound, Moran allowed a ground rule double to pinch hitter Caleb Adams as SLU doubled its lead to 4-1. Two more runs would score in the inning as the visitors took a 6-1 advantage.
Embry-Riddle went quietly in the sixth and seventh before the Lions doubled their run total with a six-run eighth, accounting for the 12-1 final.
The Eagles travel to Savannah State on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. non-conference game with the Tigers.
