DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The 14th-ranked Embry-Riddle women's lacrosse team suffered its third Sunshine State Conference loss of the season on Wednesday, falling to third-ranked Tampa (14-2, 6-0) 14-7 at the Embry-Riddle Lacrosse Stadium. The Eagles are now 12-4 overall and 3-3 in the league.
Tampa scored the first goal of the game two minutes into the contest, but
Sallie Squire pulled the Eagles level less than a minute later and that marked the start of a three-goal spurt by the Eagles as scores by
Samantha Reich and
Anna Maurer gave the Blue and Gold a 3-1 lead. The Eagles and the Spartans traded goals over the next 7:20 resulting in a 5-4 edge for the Blue and Gold at the end of the first quarter.
The Eagles had three good looks at goal in the second quarter, but Tampa's Alex Walling was able to stop all three attempts. The Spartans took advantage of their chances on offense, scoring four goals in the period to open an 8-5 lead at the half.
Embry-Riddle continued to struggle on offense in the third quarter managing just one shot in the period, while the Spartans scored on three of their nine shot attempts.
After a Julia Kolderman goal increased the Tampa lead to 12-5 to start the fourth quarter, Squire ended the Eagles' scoring drought, beating Walling low for the Eagles' sixth goal of the game. Squire scored her 60th goal of the season with 6:43 left in the game, but three fourth-quarter scores by Tampa sealed the win for the visitors.
Squire finished with four goals and an assist to match her goal total of 60 from the 2022 season.
The Eagles will wrap up regular season play at 12 p.m. on Saturday when travel across the state to take on Saint Leo in the final SSC fixture of 2023.
