Moran Twirls Complete Game Shutout of Tritons to Open Baseball's Weekend Series; Saturday's Games Moved Up Due to Weather

DAYTONA BEACH, Florida - Dillon Moran was nearly untouchable on Friday night, pitching the first complete game shutout for Embry-Riddle baseball since March 23, 2019 as the Eagles downed visiting Eckerd, 6-0 to open the two teams' weekend slate. The Eagles (22-21, 9-16) collected 13 hits on offense, scratching across six runs, including a four-run sixth inning to put the game away, while Moran was magnificent, allowing just two hits to the Tritons (18-22, 6-16 SSC) with eight strikeouts, all on 100 pitches, including retiring the final 11 batters he faced on the night.

Eckerd put just two runners in scoring position all game, and Moran left them there, never really feeling threatened, also getting some nice defensive plays from his infielders, including a pair of double plays to limit the baserunners by the visiting team. The last complete game shutout by an Eagle pitcher was Garrett Goodall versus Florida Tech back in 2019, an 11-0 shutout at Sliwa Stadium. Friday's game also marked the second time this year an ERAU opponent has managed just two base hits.

The Tritons got one of those two hits in the first, a two-out single that Moran shrugged off by getting a fly ball to end the frame, and then in the second Moran induced a 5-4-3 double play, turned nicely by Matthew Coker at second, to send the game to the bottom of the inning with a 0-0 score line.

Embry-Riddle got the only run it would need in the bottom of the second when Kevin Vittoria got an infield single with a runner at third in the form of Garrett Bogart, pushing the Eagles up 1-0, a score that Moran would make stand the whole night.

Eckerd starter Jacob Stipp was matching Moran through four innings, but ERAU was able to double its lead in the fifth when Camden Traficante singled to no-man's land in center, scoring Coker all the way from first base, making it 2-0.

Josh Reynolds make a fantastic diving snag at first base in the sixth, robbing Tyler Cox of a double and doubling off the runner at first, the second DP turned by ERAU's defense for their right-handed starter, and then in the bottom of the sixth the Eagles put the game out of reach, scoring four runs on five hits and two walks.

Bogart and Vittoria singled around a walk from Jeremy Kennedy-Davis, loading the bases for Dylan Brazil and his single to left center plated two runs before Coker single, again loading the bases, this time in front of Traficante. The Eagle third baseman poked a ball through the right side of the infield, scoring two more runs and making it 6-0 in favor of the hosts.

Moran (5-3) would not allow another baserunners the rest of the game, striking out five of the final nine batters he faced in the seventh, eighth, and ninth, cruising to his fifth win of 2023.

Bogart and Vittoria each had three hits, while Traficante registered three RBIs.

The Eagles and Tritons will try and beat the rain tomorrow, moving the start time for tomorrow's DH up to 10 a.m. at Sliwa Stadium.
