Runs Abound in Softball’s 10-1 Series Clincher Over Eckerd

St. Petersburg, Fla. - It took the Embry-Riddle softball team just two innings to reach its second-highest run total in a game this season when the Eagles (26-21, 13-14 Sunshine State Conference) scored five times in both the first and second innings to run rule Eckerd 10-1 in five innings. It was the squad's second-largest margin of victory this season.

The Eagles struck early and often, scoring five runs in the top of the first. An error, walk, and hit-by-pitch to Mia Macchia, Mahaliyah Sandridge, and Emma Wood loaded the bases for Lauren Latoria who doubled to left to plate the first two runs of the game. Soon after, Karina Ortiz-Munoz wore a pitch to once again fill up the bases. Kelsey Kressler then brought in a third run with a groundout to second, and Raissa Bianco capped off the frame with a two-RBI double over the left fielder's head.

The Blue and Gold's lead doubled in size to 10-0 in the following frame as the first four Eagles got on base. Macchia reached for the second-straight time due to a fielding miscue, and Sandridge, Wood, and Latoria followed with base knocks to add two more runs. Ortiz-Munoz sent the lead to double digits in a single swing when she unloaded on a pitch and sent it well over the center field fence for her team-leading third home run of the year.

A pair of hit batters in the bottom half of the inning set the Tritons (21-23, 6-21 SSC) up for a double to take away the shutout, but that would be the only run Eckerd would score.

Then in the fourth, a throwing error and a single put two on with one out when the next Triton grounded a ball out into right field. Mallory Kinahan charged in, corralled the ball, and threw it home to easily tag out a runner trying to score.

Five Eagles crossed the plate twice including Macchia, Sandridge, Wood, Latoria and Ortiz-Munoz. Additionally, Wood, Latoria and Bianco accumulated a pair of RBIs with Ortiz-Munoz leading the team with a career-high three. Sandridge was the only member of the Blue and Gold to record multiple hits (2-for-2).

Wood (3-0) made just her second start of the season in the circle and pitched 4.2 scoreless innings with just five hits allowed and a strikeout. Kinahan made a brief pitching appearance in the second. She recorded one out.

Embry-Riddle improves to 18-3 all-time against the Tritons with a 9-3 record on the road. ERAU has won every three-game series.

Up next is Senior Night for the Eagles as Embry-Riddle returns home for its final series of the season. ERAU will host Barry for a trio of games, starting on Friday, May 5 at 7 p.m.
