DAYTONA BEACH, Florida - The Embry-Riddle baseball team wasn't able to get its first series win over Nova Southeastern since joining the Sunshine State Conference, dropping both ends of a Friday doubleheader to the Sharks, 10-3 and 4-2. The Sharks (16-17, 6-9 SSC) pounded out 18 hits in the day's opener to tie the series before shocking the Eagles (17-17, 6-12 SSC) with a four-run ninth inning in the finale.
The Eagles host Flagler on Tuesday at Sliwa Stadium. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
Game 1 • NSU 10, ERAU 3
It was death by a thousand cuts for the Eagles in Friday's opener as the Sharks scored runs in six of their nine innings while collecting 18 hits and getting a strong start from Cooper Omans to deal the hosts a 10-3 setback.
ERAU got an unearned run in the first without the benefit of a hit when
Camden Traficante scored on
AJ Marinello's sacrifice fly, and
Tyler Stufano made the 1-0 lead stand up until the third when the visitors strung together four hits to jump in front 2-1, and the Eagles were never able to come back.
NSU pushed its lead to 3-1 in the fourth, but the Eagles had a chance to make some noise in the bottom of the inning when Marinello and Bogart had back-to-back hits to start the frame. Omans struck out
Josh Reynolds and then
Zach Coldsnow before inducing a pop up from
Jeremy Kennedy-Davis to keep the momentum in the NSU dugout.Â
The visitors used that momentum to extend their lead even further with two runs in the fifth, chasing Stufano from the contest for
Gunnar Harrison.
Trailing 5-1, ERAU again left two runners on the bases in the fifth, then went quietly in the sixth and seventh against Omans while the Sharks went up 7-1.
A two-run homer in the eighth made it 9-1 before Bogart drove in ERAU's second run of the day with a double, chasing home
Alex Britton, and Marinello later scored when
Robert Post collected a sac fly to right, but it was too little, too late as the Sharks came away with the 10-3 win.
Stufano (4-4) took the loss, while Bogart was the only Eagle with multiple hits, finishing with two.
Game 2 • NSU 4, ERAU 2
It was a heartbreaking loss for the Blue and Gold in the second game in front of a great crowd for ERAU Faculty/Staff Appreciation Day. The Eagles got the best start of the season from Connor Dunnam, taking a 2-0 lead into the ninth before the Sharks rallied thanks to four hits and two big Embry-Riddle errors.
Dunnam threw eight shutout innings, rarely facing much resistance from the Shark batters, collecting six strikeouts and putting his team firmly in line for the series win. However, after giving up a leadoff double to start the ninth, Dunnam was relieved by
Joe Balsam, and on Balsam's third pitch of the day, Daniel Irisarri grounded a ball to short that was mishandled, allowing the Sharks to have runners on the corners with no outs. A single through the left side scored NSU's first run, and after a sacrifice bunt, an infield single tied the game at 2-2. A stolen base and single up the middle later, and the Sharks led 4-2 in a wild turnaround.
Embry-Riddle got their leadoff man on in the last of the ninth, but NSU closer Michael Dillon got a double play ball and then retired Marinello for the final out of the game, ending his 15-game reached base streak and securing the series win for the visitors.
Robert Post put ERAU up 1-0 with a solo homer in the fourth, and the home team doubled its lead in the fifth when
Kevin Vittoria and
Dylan Brazil hit two consecutive doubles for a 2-0 Eagle advantage.
Balsam (2-1) took the loss, while ERAU stranded 10 runners in the finale. Brazil finished 3-for-3.
