Baseball Shuts Out Saints 4-0, Completing Season Sweep of Former Rival

DAYTONA BEACH, Florida - The Embry-Riddle baseball team registered its first shutout since March 14 of last year, and its first shutout against Flagler since 2011 on Tuesday night at Sliwa Stadium, 4-0. The Eagles jumped back over .500 on the season (18-17) while claiming their fifth straight win against the Saints (11-26) thanks to a five-hit combined shutout by four Eagle pitchers.

Spencer Marinac, Tyler Stufano, Casey Keller, and Joe Balsam scattered five hits between them, stranding seven runners on the bases, while the Eagle offense scored the only run they needed in the second before adding on solo runs in the third, seventh, and eighth.

Marinac needed just 11 pitches to breeze through the first inning, and the Eagles nearly scored the first run of the game in their half of the frame, but with two on and two out, Jake Janata was able to get out of the inning unscathed.

Marinac danced out of trouble in the second after a meeting between himself and catcher Jeremy Kennedy-Davis with two men on, striking out Bryce Fitzgerald for the third out of the inning.

Dylan Brazil scored the winning run in the second when he beat out an infield single with two outs, stealing second and then scoring on a pair of Saint errors on the same play on a ground ball off the bat of Matthew Coker, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead, one that stood up for the final seven innings.

Marinac got two outs in the third, but loaded the bases before being relieved by Stufano, but none of the Saints on the bags would touch home as Camden Traficante made the correct play on a ground ball to third, going to second for the force to send the Eagles back into the dugout with a 1-0 lead.

AJ Marinello doubled the ERAU cushion in the bottom of the third, singling up the middle to plate Traficante after a leadoff double, but that was the final scoring the Eagles would do until the seventh.

Stufano faced the minimum in the fourth, just one over the minimum in the fifth and then needed just eight pitches to retire all six batters he faced in the sixth and seventh, leading to the stretch.

Coker started the bottom of the seventh inning with a double to left center, moving to third on a fly out to center and then scoring on a Traficante single down the left field line, pushing the Eagle advantage to 3-0.

Keller came in for Stufano to start the eighth, getting two quick ground outs, but on the second out, was struck by the bat as it sailed towards the mound, leading to him exiting the game for ERAU closer Joe Balsam. Balsam got the final out of the eighth and the Eagles tacked on one final insurance run in the bottom of the inning thanks to the incredible speed of Josh Reynolds.

Reynolds singled to start the inning, stealing second and then third on back-to-back pitches, before scoring on a wild pitch, doing all the work himself for a 4-0 Embry-Riddle lead.

Balsam worked around a leadoff single in the fifth, recording two strikeouts in the frame, including a backwards K for the 27th out of the night.

Stufano (5-4) got the win, while Balsam picked up his fifth save of the 2023 season. Traficante finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored for the Eagle offense.

Embry-Riddle hits the road for seven straight away contests, starting on Friday with a 6 p.m. game against Palm Beach Atlantic in West Palm Beach.
