DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle men's tennis team closed out regular season play wiht a 6-1 defeat of Palm Beach Atlantic in Sunshine State Conference play on Saturday. With the victory, the 34
th-ranked Eagles (12-9, 3-4) secured a spot in the 2023 SSC Tournament, which will be held April 20-22 at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida.
The Eagles surrendered just two games at the second and third doubles spots combined.
Lukas Schneider and
Michele Iftimie got the scoring started with a 6-0 defeat of Luis Eduardo Platas and Juanfer Contreras on court two and
Fernando Alonso and
Alvaro Diaz Rodrigo followed with a 6-2 win against Michal Precikowski and Osvaldo Godoy at No. 3.
The match at No. 1 doubles stayed on serve until ERAU's
Alexis Guedy and
Luke Paschal broke to go up 4-3, but PBA's Marko Visontai and Blake Williams broke back and the match progressed to a 6-6 tie. Both sides were even through the first six points of the tiebreaker until Guedy and Paschal rattled off four points in a row to win the match 7-6 (3).
Schneider's 6-1, 6-3 win over Axel Reich marked the Eagles' second point of the day and Alonso made it 3-0 with his 6-2, 6-1 win against Williams.
The clinching point came from Diaz Rodrigo who topped Contreras 6-4, 6-3 at No. 4. The final two wins were hard-fought battles for Guedy and Iftimie at the top two spots as Iftimie earned a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 win over Platas and Guedy held off Roberto Binaghi 6-0, 7-6 (8-6), 10-8.
