DAYTONA BEACH, Florida - The 53rd walk off in Sliwa Stadium history secured Embry-Riddle baseball's series win over No. 3 Rollins on Friday afternoon as
Kevin Vittoria touched home in the bottom of the 11th inning for a 6-5 win over the Tars. The Eagles (24-23, 11-18 SSC) are the first Sunshine State Conference team to take a series from the third-ranked Tars (34-15, 22-7 SSC) in 2023, and will go for the sweep in the season finale tomorrow at 12 p.m. on Senior Day.
Vittoria's winning run came in the last of the 11th inning. Vittoria led off the frame against Rollins closer Tate Stone-Frisina by reaching second base on a Tar error, moving to third on
Alex Britton's perfectly placed bunt down the third base line. With the infield in and
Camden Traficante at the plate, Traficante hit a ball to the Rollins shortstop who fielded it and fired it home, but the visiting catcher couldn't handle the throw, allowing Vittoria to touch home plate and cause the Eagle bench to explode out of the dugout.
The game went to extras because the Tars were able to score twice in the top of the ninth after the Eagles led for nearly the entirety of the contest.
Casey Keller, who pitched the final five innings of relief for the Eagles, held the visitors scoreless in both the 10th and 11th, each time stranding the potential go-ahead run in scoring position.
Dillon Moran started the game for the Blue and Gold, taking a perfect game into the fifth inning. The Eagle righty retired the first 12 batters he faced, getting solid defense behind him, highlighted by a tremendous diving play in right from
AJ Marinello in the top of the third inning.
ERAU scored first when
Matthew Coker came through with a two-out RBI single through the infield in the second inning, scoring
Garrett Bogart from second to stake Moran to an early 1-0 lead.
The Eagles quadrupled their lead in the fourth, beginning with a
Dylan Brazil single through the right side to plate
Josh Reynolds after the Eagles had collected two hits from Bogart and
Robert Post. After Coker was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Vittoria came through with a double to left center, scoring both Brazil and Post to make it 4-0.
After retiring his 13th consecutive batter to begin the fifth, Rollins put a bunt down to break up Moran's no-hit bid, but that's all they got before Moran got out of the frame.
A leadoff homer in the Tar sixth ended Moran's scoreless streak at 16 innings, and the visitors threatened for more, putting runners at the corners with two outs before Moran struck out Ryan Coleman for the final out of the inning, keeping ERAU in front, 4-1.
Rollins loaded the bases with no outs against Moran in the seventh, and a Parker Smith single to left scored two Tar runs, bringing them within 4-3. Keller was called upon to put out the fire and he did just that, getting a 5-4-3 double play and then a swinging strikeout to send ERAU back to the dugout with a one-run lead.
Keller left a pair of Rollins runners in the eighth and the Eagles tacked on an insurance run in their half of the frame when
Dylan Brazil singled to short with the bases loaded, scoring Bogart to make it 5-3.
The Tars hit back-to-back singles to start the ninth, and a passed ball allowed both of the runners to move up a base before an RBI groundout and wild pitch tied the game.
Embry-Riddle had a chance to walk it off in the 10th when Bogart got to third with one out after a single, sac bunt and wild pitch, but a ball hit right to the RC first baseman resulted in Bogart being cut down at the dish, keeping the game tied before ERAU eventually walked it off in the 11th.
Keller (3-1) got the win in five innings of relief, allowing two runs on six hits with three Ks. Moran finished his season with a six-inning outing, allowing three runs with six strikeouts.
Bogart finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Brazil went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run, and Vittoria had two RBIs and the game-winning run on hid game ledger.
Vittoria and Bogart, along with
Tyler Stufano,
Lance Minson,
Conner Dunnam and
Blaine Hogue will be honored tomorrow prior to the game between the Eagles and Tars.
