Volleyball Splits Matches With Missouri-Based Foes to Begin Flagler Saints Classic

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle volleyball team kicked off the Flagler Saints Classic on Friday by earning a win and a loss against a pair of first-time opponents. In the first match of the day, the Eagles (4-2) brought out the brooms to sweep Missouri Southern State before dropping a match to No. 8 Missouri-St. Louis in three sets in the afternoon.

Eagles vs. Missouri Southern State

Embry-Riddle took control from the start of the first set. After the Lions (4-1) evened the score at 2-2, the Eagles scored six-straight points to jump out to an 8-2 advantage. After notching nine aces in last week's Bahama House Labor Day Classic, Jaden McBride continued her strong serving with two more aces in ERAU's 6-0 run. Though the Lions did manage to trim the Eagle lead down to five points at 19-14, ERAU stepped on the gas and closed the set on a 6-1 spurt, mostly due to three MSSU attacking errors, to take it 25-15.

Set two was more of the same. With a 6-4 lead, Hunter Ackerman decided to put the team on her back and helped the Eagles score seven unanswered points, which began with three kills from the junior in the first four points of that run. Now up 13-4, two more Ackerman spikes assisted ERAU in doubling up MSSU 16-8 before the Lions rattled off four straight points to come within four at 16-12.

The Devyn Petrowski to McBride connection led to back-to-back Eagle tallies, but Missouri Southern State scored five straight to shrink ERAU's lead to a single point at 18-17. Now leading 21-20, Embry-Riddle claimed the final four points with two Ackerman spikes and a pair of Lion attacking errors to go up two sets to none with a 25-20 second set win.

ERAU controlled the opening two points of set three, but MSSU hogged four of the next five to put the Eagles behind for just the second time in the match at 4-3. From there, the Blue and Gold went on a 6-1 run due to four Lion miscues and led 9-5. The advantaged ballooned up to 24-15, but the match point proved elusive. Two kills and two aces nearly cut the Eagle lead in half to 24-19, but Ruby Owen slammed a ball right at two MSSU blockers to hand the Lions their first loss of the season.

Ackerman set a career-high in kills with 17 and an efficient .500 hit percentage. McBride followed with 13 kills and 11 digs for her third double-double of the season. Grace Datil was the top setter, registering 33 assists. Tamzen Wilson led in digs (14) while Haley Manjack accumulated the most blocks (7).

It was the second time in the last three matches the Eagles held the opposition to a sub-.100 hit percentage (.096). At the same time, ERAU recorded its best single-match hit percentage of the season at .291.

Eagles vs. No. 8 Missouri-St. Louis

After the Tritons (5-0) claimed the opening point, the Eagles used a 3-0 run to earn a slim lead. From there, the teams traded blows with neither able to create more than three-points of separation. ERAU maintained a slim lead up until the 11-9 mark when UMSL rattled off three-straight points to take its second lead of the set 12-11.

The deficit grew for the Blue and Gold to 15-12, but McBride and Manjack struck for three kills in a row to even the set at 15 all. At set point for the Tritons, Dana Gibbons kept the Eagles in the match with a kill before a UMSL attacking error shrunk the deficit to 24-23, forcing a Tritons timeout. However, UMSL managed to secure the set-winning point out of the timeout for a 25-23 score.

Three consecutive Triton points got the second set going. Their lead increased all the way up to 11-6 until McBride, Ackerman, and Manjack revived the Eagle attack to get within one point of UMSL at 13-12. Unfortunately, the Tritons kept their distance to win the second set 25-20.

UMSL once again came out firing in the third set, taking possession of the opening four points and then three of the next five to put the Eagles behind 7-2. Thankfully, the Blue and Gold bounced back with a 5-0 run to even the set at seven points each. Embry-Riddle then grabbed its first lead of the set at 9-8 when both Manjack and Ackerman registered one kill each. The Eagles held the one-point advantage after each squad scored four straight points to make the match 20-19. Fastforward a few more points, and the score was 22-22 when the Tritons used three kills to seal the sweep and thwart ERAU's hope at a comeback.

Ackerman paced the team with 15 kills, though it was McBride who earned her fourth double-double of the season with 14 kills and 11 digs.

The two squads consistently found success when attacking as the Tritons hit .414 and the Eagles hit a season-best .351

Embry-Riddle closes out the Flagler Saints Classic with matches against Converse (3 p.m.) and host Flagler (7:30 p.m.) on Saturday.
