Women’s Basketball Fends Off Buccaneers 73-71

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle women's basketball team earned a hard-fought 73-71 win against Barry on Saturday afternoon. It was the Eagles' first win at the Buccaneers since 2019, and it improved ERAU's all-time record against Barry to 9-5.

The high-scoring affair was expected as both squads ranked as the top two teams in the Sunshine State Conference in scoring average. However, the Eagles had to attempt to contain the league's leading scorer in Audre Jennings, who averaged 18.1 points per game.

Embry-Riddle (11-3, 5-2 SSC) narrowly outshot Barry (7-8, 2-5 SSC) 43.8 percent to 42.9 percent. The Eagles also notched a season-low 11 fouls in the contest.

A deep ball by Eva Zaragoza gave the Eagles their first lead of the contest at 5-2 just under two minutes in. Embry-Riddle stood tall defensively to start, forcing the Buccaneers to miss four of their first five shots.

At the media timeout at the 5:04 mark, ERAU found much success inside the interior up to that point with half of the team's 12 points coming from inside the paint. The blue and gold remained close to Barry throughout much of the opening quarter, but the Buccaneers surged over the final two minutes and registered seven unanswered points to put Embry-Riddle behind 23-15.

However, the Eagles wasted no time setting the tone in the second quarter as both Jenna Teterycz and Kyra Haan scored in the opening thirty seconds to bring the Blue and Gold within four points at 23-19. Still, the Eagles continued to chip away. Two minutes later, Haan nailed a 3-pointer from the corner to trim the deficit to just two points (26-24). ERAU made seven of its first eight attempts to begin the second quarter.

Scoring droughts commenced for both sides for the next three minutes until Laurie Satchell fought through contact to convert on a layup to make the score 36-32 Barry with 2:12 left. A beautiful spin move a minute later by Satchell on a lay-in tied the score at 36 after Madyson Jean-Louis hit a pair of free throws, and Jean-Louis then mimicked Satchell's move to put the Eagles ahead 38-36. That capped an 8-0 run to end the quarter that was aided by a stout Blue and Gold defense that forced seven turnovers in the final 4:31 of the period.

ERAU continued to thrive inside with 22 of its 38 points coming from shots within the paint.

Haan picked right up from where she left off with the first bucket of the third quarter to push ERAU ahead 40-36 just 98 seconds in. However, Barry retook the lead with 7:21 on the clock at 43-42. Out of a timeout, Sarah Napoli got into the scoring column in a big way as she nailed back-to-back-to-back shots from downtown to send the Blue and Gold up by 10 points (57-47) with 2:23 to go. That capped off a 15-4 run by the visitors, but the Buccaneers fought back with a 7-0 spurt of their own to cut the Eagles' lead to three (57-54) with a minute to go.

Teterycz was able to make a mid-range shot just seconds before the buzzer sounded, and Embry-Riddle led 59-54 with one quarter to go.

Jennings single-handedly erased the Eagles' lead, as she scored the Buccaneers' first 13 points of the period, forcing ERAU to trail 64-62. The two teams traded blows with the Eagles going on a five-point run followed by a six-point scoring streak for Barry. With 2:36 left in the game, Embry-Riddle trailed 70-67, but Haan and Jean-Louis knocked down a layup each to regain the lead. During the Buccaneers' next possession, they missed two free throw attempts, allowing Jean-Louis to take it down to the other end of the court and convert on a charity stripe shot of her own, making it 72-70 Eagles with 38 seconds remaining.

Barry then forced a jump ball turnover and soon after once again returned to the line for a pair of free throw attempts with the chance to tie the contest with only 12 seconds left on the game clock. However, the Buccaneers went one-for-two, allowing the Blue and Gold to keep a one-point 72-71 advantage. An immediate foul allowed Jean-Louis to sink another free throw, and the Eagles possessed a two-point lead. Barry swiftly attacked the rim, but ERAU denied the Buccaneers from up close twice to secure the win.

Jean-Louis led the team with 22 points, Satchell contributed 14 points on 7-of-7 shooting and five boards, and Haan added 12 points. Kailey Turpening recorded seven assists, and Teterycz led in rebounds with six. Also of note, Mary Lengemann made her first 3-point shot of the season.

Embry-Riddle returns home for a pair of contests at the ICI Center next week, beginning with Dynamic Duo Night presented by Stoked Poke on Wednesday, Jan. 17 at 5:30 p.m. against Saint Leo.
