DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – For the third time in four games,
Madyson Jean-Louis scored more than 20 points in a game for Embry-Riddle Women's Basketball. The junior totaled a career-high 25 points to lead the Eagles past Rollins, 75-63, in Sunshine State Conference play at the ICI Center on Saturday. Both teams came into Saturday's contest with identical 6-2 records in league play and with the win, the Eagles are now in sole possession of second place in the league standings with a 7-2 SSC record and a 13-3 ledger on the year.
Jean-Louis was one of three Embry-Riddle players to score in double digits as
Mary Lengemann and
Laurie Satchell combined for 24 points off the bench with Lengemann totaling 10 points and six rebounds, and Satchell adding 14 points and four boards.
Chandler Brooks had a career-best seven assists off the bench, as did
Kailey Turpening who also had six rebounds and five points.
The Tars controlled the game early, outscoring the Eagles 13-8 in the first five minutes. Five straight points by Mary Lengeman, beginning with a jumper at the 3:20 mark, cut the Tars lead to one (13-12) and free throws by
Jenna Teterycz and Brooks gave the Eagles a 14-13 edge at the end of the first quarter.
The Eagles owned the first four minutes of the second quarter. A 9-0 scoring run had Rollins searching for answers, but three consecutive timeouts couldn't solve the Embry-Riddle as the Eagles held the visitors scoreless on the way to a 14-point (27-13) advantage. The Tars were finally able to end their scoring drought and managed to reduce the Eagle lead to seven, but ERAU ended the half on a 6-2 run to take a 35-24 lead into the halftime break.
The teams were evenly matched in the third period. The Tars were 31.3 percent (14-of-35) from the field, while the Eagles shot 31.6 percent (13-of-31), and with the teams tallying 15 points apiece, the Eagles were able to maintain their 11-point advantage, closing out the quarter up 50-39.
Baskets by Turpening, Satchell and Jean-Louis, as well as a three by
Sarah Napoli helped the Eagles widen the gap to 16 points (60-44) with 6:35 left in the game. The Tars responded with a 12-2 scoring run and with 3:29 remaining, the Eagle advantage had dwindled to six (62-56). Over the next minute, the teams traded baskets to keep the scoring margin at six points. In the last 1:58, the Tars turned the ball over once and connected on just one of their last three shot attempts, while the Eagles knocked down seven of eight free throws to secure the win.
Aaliy Irizarry-Perez recorded a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Tars who are now 9-6 overall and 6-3 in the SSC.
The Eagles are on the road for their next conference game as the travel to St. Petersburg to take on Eckerd at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
