DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's basketball team was unable to get by No. 21 Tampa at the ICI Center on Saturday, falling to the Spartans 63-46. The loss snapped a seven-game winning streak for the Eagles who are now 14-4 overall and third in the Sunshine State Conference standings at 8-3. The Spartans moved into second place in the league at 9-2 and are 18-4 on the year.
Tampa raced out to a 10-4 lead in the first three minutes of the game, but the Eagles used a 7-2 run to reduce the deficit to one point (12-11) at the 4:59 mark. Following a scoreless three-minute stretch, the Spartans scored twice to go back up by five, but
Sarah Napoli knocked down a three at the end of the quarter to make it a two-point game (16-14) in favor of Tampa.
The second 10 minutes of action favored Tampa who shot 69.2 percent (9-for-13) from the field, including 3-of-4 from long range to extend the lead to as many as 19 points before taking a 41-24 advantage into the halftime break.
The Eagles won the third quarter as solid defense limited the Spartans to just three made field goals allowing ERAU to outscore the Spartans 14-7.
Eva Zaragoza started the period with a three and another three by
Madyson Jean-Louis helped the Eagles cut the lead to 10 (48-38) going into the fourth.
The teams were even through the first seven minutes of the fourth, but the Eagles went scoreless in the last 3:10 allowing the Spartans to leave with the 15-point win.
Jean Louis and
Laurie Satchell paced the Eagles on Saturday with Jean-Louis tallying 12 points and eight rebounds and Satchell finishing with 11 points and a career-high nine boards off the bench.
The Eagles have a week before their next game which will be at Florida Tech at 2 p.m. on Feb. 3.
