Game Recap: #8 Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer Tops Eckerd 2-0

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – In a rare Sunday afternoon contest, the Embry-Riddle women's soccer team scored twice in the second half of play to record their second Sunshine State Conference win of the season, topping Eckerd 2-0 at the Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium. A goal and an assist from Lauryn Mateo helped the Eagles improve to 6-3-1 overall and 2-1-1 in league play. Eckerd sits at 1-3-3 on the year and 0-2 in the SSC.

The Blue and Gold controlled much of the play in the first half but went into the halftime break with not goals to show for their efforts. The Eagles' best look of the half came in the 35th minute when Wilma Bergman took a first-touch shot off a Grace Foyer pass that was headed to the back of the net, but Eckerd's goalkeeper Cadence Talbert came up with the big save for the Tritons to end the half in a scoreless draw.

The Eagles finally found the breakthrough they were looking for just under five minutes into the second half. The play started in the back where Mathilda Taylor won the ball from an Eckerd attacker then played a pass to Foyer deep in the Tritons' half. Foyer played a long ball up the field to Lauryn Mateo and the sophomore's strike from close to 30 yards out caught Talbert off her line and rolled into the back of the net to give the Blue and Gold a 1-0 advantage.

Mateo was also involved in the Eagles' second goal of the afternoon, this time as a facilitator. After running down a ball on the right side of the pitch and preventing it from going out of play, Mateo drove into the box. She managed to elude two defenders before beating a third with her pass to Agnes Vigholm and the freshman hit a half volley past Talbert for the first goal of her collegiate career and a 2-0 Eagle lead.

The Tritons battled hard and took a shot that required a save by ERAU goalkeeper Oona Jokinen in the 67th minute, but the visitors were outshot 10-2 in the final 45 minutes of play. Talbert finished with four saves in the Triton effort.

The Eagles' next game will be at 7 p.m. on Wednesday when they host Palm Beach Atlantic at the Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium in another SSC contest.
