Daytona Beach, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle men's soccer team faced off against Saint Leo University in a gripping mid-week showdown. A game of goals resulted in a 2-2 draw for the Eagles.
From the opening whistle, the Eagles displayed an aggressive game plan aimed to challenge the Lions' defense. Tom Shepard initiated the action with the first shot of the match, firing from outside the box but sending it wide. The Lions, however, responded well, creating opportunities of their own. Both teams exchanged shots throughout the first half, each testing the other's defense.
The Eagles found the breakthrough with key substitutions from Coach
David Gregson. With just six minutes remaining in the half,
Anthony Velez made a swift run down the right side, delivering a precise cross to
Sandro Henning, whose header found the back of the net. The Eagles headed into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
The second half saw the Lions come out strong, controlling possession early on. Their persistence paid off in the 57th minute when Juan David Hoffman delivered a cross that Anel Rojas expertly headed past goalkeeper
Salvatore della Valle, equalizing the score. This marked Della Valle's last play of the match, as he was substituted for Ferriol Caballe I Vila.
The Eagles continued to push forward, with Shepard striking another powerful shot that forced a diving save from Lions keeper James Knudsen. A turning point came when the Eagles capitalized on a defensive error from Saint Leo, that resulted in a penalty kick. Henning stepped up confidently, converting the penalty to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead with 16 minutes left on the clock.
However, the Lions responded swiftly, equalizing less than a minute later. A cross from Yuto Leo Komine found the head of Rojas, mirroring their previous goal and leveling the score at 2-2. In the final moments, the Eagles sought a late winner, finding Henning in the box again. He aimed for a hat-trick but narrowly missed with a header that went a hair wide. The match concluded in a dramatic 2-2 draw, Eagles now 4-6-2 (SSC 2-4-1) and Lions 3-6-1 (SSC 2-2-2).
The Eagles play their final home game of the season on Saturday at ERAU Soccer Stadium where they take on Rollins College at 7 p.m.
