Women’s Basketball Registers Decisive Win in Home Opener

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The Embry-Riddle women's basketball team overcame a slow start to register a decisive victory  in its first home game of the season on Saturday. The Eagles scored more than 80 points for the fourth time in as many games this season, dispatching Puerto Rico-Mayaguez (0-2) 90-45 to improve to 4-0 on the year.

As a team, the Eagles were 52.0 percent (26-of-50) from the field and 47.6 percent (10-of-21) in three-pointers. The Janes connected on 18 of their 58 fields and managed just six threes, but the biggest discrepancy was at the free throw line where UPRM was 3-of-5, while the Eagles were 28-of-45, setting a program single-game record for free throw attempts.

The Eagles' leading scorer was Madyson Jean-Louis who scored 16 points to go with a game-high seven rebounds. Jenna Teterycz came off the bench in the first quarter and in her first action of the year, the senior was near perfect, going 4-for-4 from the field with a 3-for-3 clip from long range and 3-of-4 from the free throw line to finish with 14 points and five boards.

Kailey Turpening also finished five rebounds and dished out 10 assists moving into a tie for third on the Eagles' single-game assist listing. Anye' Staton provided another spark of the bench, scoring 10 points in the win.

The first three and a half minutes of play belonged to the Janes as five missed shots and four miscues by the Eagles helped the visitors jump out to an 8-2 lead. UPRM led by seven 13-6) with just over 4:06 left in the quarter, but the Eagles closed out the period on a 10-2 run to go into the second up 16-15.

The second 10 minutes of play were just as tight as the first. With 1:21 left, Mary Lengemann knocked down a pair of free throws to give the Eagles a 34-32 edge at the half.

The second half was all Embry-Riddle. The Eagles shot 66.7 percent from the field in each of the last two quarters, going 10-for-15 in the third and 6-for-9 in the fourth. They outscored the Janes 28-8 in the third and 28-5 to in the fourth and were 14-20 in free throws in a fourth quarter that saw 14 fouls called against the Janes. ERAU held the Janes scoreless for a eight-minute stretch that began at the 4:06 mark of the third to roll to the win in their final pre-conference game of the year.

The Blue and Gold will be back in action on Wednesday, playing their first Sunshine State Conference game of the season against Eckerd. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at the ICI Center.
