Women’s Soccer Struggles in Loss to Flagler

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's soccer team (8-6-2) suffered a 4-0 loss to Flagler (7-2-5) in the Eagles' final non-conference match of the season, Saturday at the Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium.

The stat sheet showed an even game with Embry-Riddle holding a 14-12 edge in shots, but Flagler had a 7-4 advantage in shots on frame - capitalizing on four of those chances - and got five points from Andrea Fernandez to head back to nearby St. Augustine with the win.

The Eagles' first chance of the game came in the eighth minute when Ida Zetterberg ran on to a ball played over the top of the Flagler defense. Zetterberg was able to chip Flagler goalkeeper Henley Grunst but her shot went off the cross bar to deny the Eagles a goal.

Embry-Riddle had three shots before the Saints were able to register their first and the visitors made good on two of their first three attempts as Fernandez and Churchill netted a goal apiece to give Flagler a 2-0 lead at the half.

The framework continued to be unkind to the Eagles as a Berglind Thrastardottir attempt got by Grunst but glanced off the crossbar in the 56th minute. Following a Lauryn Mateo shot in the 58th minute that sailed high, the Saints added a third goal when Fernandez finished a Churchill cross and six minutes later, Fernandez found Cisel Akhuel to seal the win for the Saints.

The Eagles will close out Sunshine State Conference regular season play at home on Wednesday when they host Nova Southeastern on senior night. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
