DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The final game of the 2024 regular season saw the Embry-Riddle women's soccer team (8-6-3, 4-3-3) tie Nova Southeastern (5-4-3, 4-1-3) 3-3 in the Eagles' Sunshine State Conference regular season finale on Wednesday. Wednesday's game was also the final home contest for seniors
Inga Agustsdottir,
Grace Foyer,
Oona Jokinen Hattie Kettle,
Alma Olesen and
Klara Ovefelt.
The Eagles came out firing in the first half. Four of the Eagles six first-half shots were on frame and they made the most of their chances scoring three goals inside the first 32 minutes of play.
In the sixth minute, the Eagles were whistled for a foul inside the Sharks 18-yard box, giving the ball back to the visitors deep inside their own defensive third. The Sharks worked to play the ball out of the back, but one of the defenders misplayed the ball and Foyer made the Sharks pay. The senior pounced on the ball and hit a low drive past Emilie Schroeder to give the Eagles an early 1-0 advantage.
Foyer was also involved in the build-up to the second goal as she dispossessed a shark midfielder and got the ball to
Lauryn Mateo. Mateo sprinted down the field before firing a shot from about 24 yards away past Schroeder to double the Eagle lead to 2-0.
Less than 10 minutes later, the Eagles struck again. Playing on the right side, Agustsdottir's short pass put Ovefelt in a position to deliver a cross into the box. Fresh off the bench,
Ida Kummel met Ovefelt's cross and tapped in her second goal of the year to put Embry-Riddle up 3-0 at the half.
The start of the second half saw the Sharks came all the way back to erase the deficit as Haley Mettrick, Sofia Suarez and Tabea Schutt each scored within the first 15 minutes of the start of the period to pull the visiting team level with the Blue & Gold.
Following the Sharks' third goal, the Eagles regrouped and regained the form that served them well in the first 45 minutes. The Eagles' chances included shots by
Kaitlyn Kogl and
Berglind Thrastardottir that forced saves from Schroeder. With 42 seconds remaining,
Agnes Vigholm rifled a shot that bounced straight down after striking the cross bar, just inches on the wrong side of the goal line. The rebound fell to Mateo, but her header was saved by Schroeder ending the game in a tie.
The Eagles will begin postseason play on Monday when the Sunshine State Conference tournament gets underway. Seedings, game times and locations will be determined following the conclusion of the SSC regular season schedule on Friday.
