MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Embry-Riddle women's basketball team left the state of Alabama with two victories following an 83-61 defeat of Montevallo, Saturday at the AUM Athletics Complex. The Eagles are now 2-0 on the season, while the Falcons drop to 0-2.
Madyson Jean-Louis had her second 20-point game in as many outings scoring a game-high 21 points to lead the Eagles.
Mary Lengemann contributed 15 points and seven rebounds, while
Laurie Satchell and
Alyssa Brasko totaled 10 points apiece. Anye' Staton was a perfect 4-for-4 from the field and matched her career-best performance with nine points, while
Kailey Turpening dished out seven assists and pulled down a career-high eight boards in the win.
The Eagles raced out to a 10-2 lead to start the contest, but the Falcons were able to claw their way back into the game and heading into the second quarter, the Eagle lead was down to one point (15-14).
The second quarter saw the Eagles struggle from the charity stripe, managing just six of their 12 free throws in that period. Lengemann hit a three to start the quarter which gave the Eagles a four-point (18-4) advantage, but over the next few minutes, missed free throws and turnovers helped the Falcons go on a 9-1 run to take over the lead (23-19). The Montevallo lead was still four points (33-29) with 2:37 left in the half, but the Eagles steadily chipped away, and
Sarah Napoli knocked down her only three of the game at the buzzer to put the Eagles up 36-33 at the half.
The contest remained close through the first three minutes of the third quarter, but a Staton layup at the 6:59 mark keyed an 11-4 run that widened the Eagle lead to 10 (53-43). The Eagles continued to hold the Falcons at arm's length and another period-ending trey – this time by
Alyssa Brasko – gave the Blue and Gold a 63-51 cushion heading into the final frame.
The Eagles' best offensive quarter came in the fourth where they shot 61.5 percent (8-of-13) from the field and 3-for-4 from the free throw line. Defensively, Embry-Riddle held the Falcons to just 18.8 percent from the field in the final 10 minutes of play to secure the 22-point victory.
"This was a great opportunity for us to play two quality teams and see what we need to work on and where we are with some of our execution and defense," ERAU Head Coach
Lisa Wilson said following Saturday's game. "We are proud of how the team responded in both games and it's great to get two regional wins this early in the season. The team can't wait to get back to work in practice this week. "
The Eagles wrap up their three-game road swing at Flagler on Wednesday. Game time is slated for 6 p.m.
