Men’s Tennis Blanks Sailfish in SSC Opener

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The 22-ranked Embry-Riddle men's tennis team was successful in its first Sunshine State Conference match of the season with a 7-0 defeat of Palm Beach Atlantic on Saturday. The win was the Eagles' second shutout of the year and improved their overall record to 2-0.
 
The Eagles won at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots to secure the doubles point. Playing on court two, Safar Rasulov and Michele Iftimie made quick work of Axel Reich and Juan Fernandez, 6-1, but the Sailfish were able to pull out a win at the top spot as Roberto Binaghi and Luis Eduardo Platas held off Josh Nuyts and Calaen Potts 7-5. The deciding match at No. 3 went to a tiebreaker and in the end Alvaro Diaz Rodrigo and Fernando Alonso outlasted Noah Muayle and Mark Visonati 7-6 () to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead heading into singles.
 
Potts grabbed the first singles point for the Eagles with his 6-0, 6-1 defeat of Reich at the fifth position. Ifitmie and Diaz Rodrigo each registered 6-4, 6-4 wins with Iftimie topping Juanfer Contreras at No. 3 and Diaz Rodrigo getting the better of the match-up against Fernandez at No. 6.
 
Rasulov notched a 6-3, 6-2 win over Binaghi at the top spot and after Nuyts pulled out a 7-6 (3), 6-1 win over Platas at No. 2, Alonso secured the shutout by winning a 6-0, 2-6, 6-3 battle over Peter Dragar at No. 4.
 
The Eagles next match will be an exhibition against Eastern Florida State at 2:30 p.m. on Feb. 16.
