Softball Drops Two Games to Close Out Embry-Riddle Invitational

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - It was a tough way to end Embry-Riddle softball's home tournament, the Embry-Riddle Invitational, on Sunday as the Eagles dropped a pair of games, one each to RV West Alabama and Valdosta State.

RV West Alabama - 13, Embry-Riddle - 0 (5 Inn.)

Game one was tough all around for the Eagles (4-4). After scoring twice in the top of the second, West Alabama (8-2) racked up nine more in the third to push ERAU in a deep 11-0 hole.

However, the Eagles executed a precise double play in the top of the fourth. With a runner on first and nobody out, the Tigers laid down a sacrifice bunt. After the batter was retired at first, Karina Ortiz-Munoz spotted the lead runner sprinting toward third, and she rifled the ball to Raissa Bianco, who then applied the tag just in time. Relief pitcher Mallory Kinahan then caught the following hitter window shopping for a strikeout and a clean defensive inning by the home team.

The fifth inning was significant for Vanessa Gilbert, who entered at catcher during the inning prior. She threw out a runner attempting to swipe second for the first out. A couple of batters later, the freshman tossed it down to second to catch a Tiger runner in a rundown as Kerry O'Sullivan chased the runner back toward first and dumped the ball off to Ortiz-Munoz who used her wheels to apply the tag just before the runner was able to reach second safely.

Mia Macchia and Bianco each recorded a hit for the Blue and Gold. Ava Domenici (L, 1-1) got the start in the circle, and she struck out a batter over 2.1 innings. Kinahan also picked up a strikeout in her 2.2 innings of relief.

Valdosta State - 7, Embry-Riddle - 4

The rematch between the Blazers (5-5) and Eagles was just as thrilling as Friday's matchup, however the result was the exact opposite as ERAU suffered a late loss to VSU when the Blazers scored all seven runs in the top of the seventh.

It was a promising start to the game when Emma Wood found herself on third base after a leadoff single and a fielding error that allowed her to advance an extra two bases in the bottom of the first. Delaney Morgan drove a deep sac fly to right to allow Wood to jog home. Another two Blazer miscues allowed Ortiz-Munoz to score a second run for the home team in the inning.

Gilbert impressed the coaching staff in the first game of the day, and that led to her inclusion into the starting lineup against VSU for the first time in her career. She picked up her first collegiate hit in the second on a single to left field.

Then in the third, the power-hitting Ortiz-Munoz crushed her third triple of the season, which is already tied for the seventh most in a single year in program history. She was in prime position to touch home when the next batter, Sydney Linn, singled up the middle.

The 3-0 lead grew to 4-0 in the fourth frame. Wood led off with her sixth double of 2024, and a mishandled ball by Valdosta State's second baseman gave Wood the chance to score the Blue and Gold's fourth run of the game.

Meanwhile, starting pitcher Shelby Morse was shoving inside the circle. Through the first six innings, she kept the visitors off the scoreboard and limited them to five hits.

Unfortunately, things unraveled in the top of the seventh. The Eagles' four-run lead turned into a three-run deficit as a dropped fly ball to start the inning eventually allowed VSU to score seven runs, six of which were unearned, on seven hits to spoil Embry-Riddle's hopes of winning the final game of the tournament.

Wood crushed it at the plate once again, going 2-for-4 with two runs while Ortiz-Munoz finished 1-for-4, also with a pair of runs scored.

Morse (L, 1-2) ended the night having pitched 6.2 innings and only allowing one earned run. Wood came in for relief to record the last out in the top of the seventh.

The Eagles hit the road for the first time this season as they begin Sunshine State Conference play with a three-game series at Barry starting on Friday, Feb. 16 at 6 p.m.
