DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's basketball team completed a season sweep of Rollins on Wednesday leaving the Tars' Warden Arena with a 78-66 victory in Sunshine State Conference play. The Eagles shot 56.3 percent from the field while limiting the Tars (11-11, 8-8) to just 36.8 percent to improve to 17-5 overall and 11-4 in the SSC.
Madyson Jean-Lous led a quartet of Embry-Riddle players scoring in double figures as she finished with 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field, seven rebounds and three assists.
Kailey Turpening had a perfect night offensively shooting 100 percent from the field (4-for-4), long range (3-for-3) and the free throw line (2-for-2) to match her career scoring record with 13 points, six assists and two boards.
Kyra Haan and
Jenna Teterycz finished with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Rollins jumped ahead 7-3 to start Wednesday's game, but the advantage was short-lived as the Eagles stormed back with an 11-0 run to go up by seven (14-7) midway through the first quarter. Jean-Louis led the Eagles across the board in the first 10 minutes with eight points on 3-of-4 shooting and two rebounds to send ERAU into the second quarter with a 23-19 lead.
Teterycz was the key to an 15-11 Eagle win in the second quarter as she was 3-for-3 from the field, including a three-pointer, for seven points in the frame. The Eagles, who led by as many as 12 points in the second, were helped by stifling defense that forced six Tar turnovers and converted those steals into seven points. At the intermission, the Eagles led 38-30.
Embry-Riddle shot the ball well in the third period, going 63.6 percent (7-of-11) from the floor. Despite connecting on just 25 percent of their shots, the Tars managed to keep the Eagles close and trailed by just eight points until back-to-back buckets by
Alyssa Brasko and Haan in the last 35 seconds extended the ERAU lead to 12 (56-44).
Teterycz came up with a steal to start the fourth quarter for the Eagles. The ensuing offensive sequence ended with Teterycz finding
Laurie Satchell under the basket and the sophomore drew a foul and knocked down both free throws to increase the lead to 14 points (58-44). Over the next three and a half minutes, Ajalon Gillard outscored the Eagles 8-1 with two threes and a layup to make it a five-point (59-54) ERAU lead with 5:54 remaining.
Turpening halted the Tars' run and ended the Eagle scoring drought with her third three of the night and threes by Teterycz and Jean-Louis, as well as baskets from
Chandler Brooks and
Mary Lengemann solidified the Eagles' hold on the game. In a three-minute stretch, the ERAU lead went from five to 18 (72-54) and while the Tars got a couple of late threes from Faith Newton, it was not enough to catch the Eagles who currently occupy third place in the SSC standings.
The Eagles are back on the road again on Saturday traveling to Saint Leo for a 4 p.m. tip.
