Softball Battles Back Late but Drops Series Opener 2-1 to Tars

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - A pitchers' duel started the series between the Embry-Riddle softball team and Rollins on Friday night as the Tars won 2-1 after a two hour rain delay. The Eagles (6-6, 2-2 Sunshine State Conference) fought hard at the end by putting the tying run in scoring position with two outs, but a strikeout ended the home team's hopes of a comeback.

Rollins (6-4, 1-3 SSC) was the first to strike, scoring a run in the second inning from three hits. The Eagles' deficit doubled when the Tars' Grace Germer singled and swiped a pair of bases to then score on a sac fly to shallow center in the third.

Though Rollins added a run in that inning, Kelsey Kressler made a pair of key plays at the hot corner after entering the game from the bench. She was tested right away with a strong ground ball that she fielded on a short hop for the first out to keep a runner at third. Then with two outs, she deflected a batted ball to the dirt and stayed with the play to throw the runner out just in time.

Emma Wood entered to pitch in the top of the fifth, and she had a lights-out relief appearance. She prevented Rollins from recording a hit and struck out two Tars to give ERAU a chance heading into the bottom of the seventh.

Embry-Riddle truly saved the best for last in the final frame with two of the team's five hits occurring in the seventh inning. Karina Ortiz-Munoz got things going with a hard-hit ball that deflected off the pitcher. However, the second baseman rushed the throw, which allowed the San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico native to advance to third on the error. Two outs later, Katriana Bain entered to pinch hit, and she earned the team's first base on balls in the game to put the tying run on.

A second pinch hitter followed in Sydney Linn, and she blasted a single through the hole on the left side of the infield to end the shutout by scoring Ortiz-Munoz and putting the tying run at second. However, a strikeout stopped the Eagles short of a comeback.

Ortiz-Munoz increased her hitting streak to five games after a 1-for-3 performance with a run scored. Linn also picked up a hit in her lone at-bat and an RBI. Ortiz-Munoz also saw lots of action in the field, recording 11 putouts, the most by an Eagle this season.

Shelby Morse (L, 2-3) allowed only two earned runs over four innings of work on five hits and a walk. She also struck out a Tar. Wood was in top form, tossing three hitless innings with a pair of strikeouts.

The series concludes on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
