Softball Splits with Rollins on Saturday

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle softball team split a doubleheader with Rollins at Radiology Associates Field on Saturday, coming from behind to win game one 8-7 but then dropping game two 4-0.

The first game was a slugfest with the two teams combining for 15 runs and 21 hits. No lead was safe as there was a total of three lead changes and two ties over the seven innings of action. The Tars (7-5, 2-4 Sunshine State Conference) managed to plate a run in each of the first six innings while the Eagles (7-7, 3-3 SSC) accumulated their runs in bunches, scoring two or more runs in three different frames.

A three-run bottom of the sixth turned a two-run deficit into a one-run lead. Then Shelby Morse came in to shut the door and leave the potential tying run stranded on third with a massive strikeout to end the game.

Game two had similarities to the first game of the series on Friday. Offense was limited as ERAU was held to a season-low one hit.

GAME 1 | Embry-Riddle - 8, Rollins - 7

Like on Friday, Rollins struck first with two singles to score the opening run. That lead was short lived when Karina Ortiz-Munoz stepped in and smashed a three-run home run to right to make it 3-1 Eagles. It was her second of the season and sixth of her career, which is tied for the sixth most all-time.

The heavy hits for the Tars trickled in beginning in the second inning. A single followed by a triple cut the Eagle lead to one run, and the game was tied 3-3 soon after in the third when two doubles plated yet another run for Rollins.

Two quick outs in the bottom of the inning gave the appearance of a quick frame, but Katriana Bain gave the home team some hope with a single through the infield hole on the right side. A walk issued to Addison Orr forced a pitching change, but then Kelsey Kressler also received a base on balls to load the bases.

Ashton Aycock stepped in to pinch hit, and she grounded a ball to the left side that escaped in between the third baseman's legs and into left field, allowing Bain and Orr to score for the Eagles to lead 5-3.

The Tars also found success with two outs in the fourth by adding a pair of runs, and then they regained the lead in the top of the fifth on a leadoff single followed by a double. The damage could have been worse if it wasn't for Bain's heads-up play at catcher. With two runners in scoring position and two outs, the batter laid down a bunt in front of home plate. Bain hastily grabbed the ball and dove back to tag out the runner on third who sprinted down the line in an attempt to score.

Rollins made it 7-5 in the sixth with yet another run scored with two outs due to a walk and a double to center.

One out into the sixth, Raissa Bianco touched 'em all with her first career home run to center to bring the Eagles within one run. Emma Wood continued the momentum with a double, and Delaney Morgan tied the game with a single to center field. A flyout to right by Ortiz-Munoz allowed Morgan to advance to third, which was the perfect spot to score from when a passed ball allowed the junior to slide in safely to regain the lead 8-7.

Just like in every prior inning, Rollins threatened to even the score in the top of the seventh. A double to start the inning and a sac bunt put the tying run on third with one out, but the Eagles stepped up when it mattered the most. Morse got the following batter to ground out to Kressler at third, which held the runner in place. Then Morse emphatically struck out the next hitter to seal the win.

Multiple Eagles produced at the plate, led by Bianco's 2-for-3 effort with two runs and an RBI in her first game atop the lineup. Morgan notched her team-best fourth multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Bain received her second multi-hit outing in the last three games, hitting 2-for-3 with a run, and Ortiz-Munoz tied her single-game career high in RBIs with three thanks to her home run. The Eagles also stole a season-best three bases.

Wood (W, 2-0) earned the win after tossing three innings of relief, and Morse earned her first-career save with a one-hit seventh inning.

GAME 2 | Rollins - 4, Embry-Riddle - 0

Stout pitching and defense carried the two teams through game two. In the first four innings, the side was retired in order on five occasions, including four straight half innings from the bottom of the second to the top of the fourth.

The Eagles did threaten in the bottom of the first after Wood and Sydney Linn earned walks to reach base. Linn eventually moved to third on a wild pitch with two outs, but a groundout ended that opportunity.

Starting pitcher Mallory Kinahan was shoving from inside the circle as she and the Eagle defense limited Rollins to just one hit in the first five innings with three strikeouts. However, four weakly-hit singles and a sacrifice fly quickly put the Eagles in a deep 4-0 hole in the top of the sixth, which turned out to be the difference. On a positive note, that sac fly was a spectacular on-the-run grab by Mia Macchia at the warning track in center field.

Linn earned Embry-Riddle's only hit of the game in the fourth inning. Kinahan (L, 2-2) became the first Eagle this season to toss a seven-inning complete game.

The Eagles step away from conference play with a home doubleheader against Bridgeport on Feb. 28 at 4 p.m.
