DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle baseball team wrapped up the second-annual GSC/SSC Clash at Sliwa Stadium on Saturday, splitting a twin-bill with visiting Alabama Huntsville. The Eagles (2-1) took the first game of the day with an offensive outburst, 14-4, before falling to the Chargers, 8-5, on the back end.
Next up for the Eagles is a nonconference trip to Florida Tech on Tuesday for a 5 p.m. affair.
Game 1 – ERAU 14, UAH 4
Coming off an impressive opening-day win on Friday, the Eagles kept things rolling into the first game of the day Saturday. ERAU collected 14 runs on 13 hits in the game to wipe the Chargers by 10.
On the hill in game one was
John Barone, who went on to strikeout three in the first and two more in the second frame. After both clubs couldn't muster a run in the first inning, the Eagles offense uncorked in the second, totaling five runs.
Josh Reynolds drew a leadoff walk, and two batters later,
Timo Aracena did the same to put two on with one out.
Jeremy Kennedy-Davis, earning the nod behind the plate for the second game in a row, followed suit and walked to load the bases. That's when
Camden Traficante unleashed a booming, bases-clearing triple to deep right, making it 3-0.
Dylan Brazil made it 4-0 two batters later, slicing one fair so Aracena could cross home to put the Eagles up 5-0.
Barone struggled in the top of the third and was relieved by
Tristan Harley in the inning. Harley's incredible effort, staying in for 6.1 innings to finish the game, included nine strikeouts to just three walks and two hits.
The Chargers made a game of it in the third, climbing back after a four-run inning to within one, forcing Coach Stegall to dip into the bullpen early. But the confidence in Harley paid off as he settled in well for the rest of the day.
On the reverse side, UAH threw a total of seven pitchers in game one, only one of whom lasted longer than two innings.
Aracena batted Reynolds around in the bottom of the third, and
AJ Marinello made it 7-4 after coming home on a wild pitch in the next at bat.
UAH and ERAU traded scoreless innings until the Eagle bats came alive once again. Kennedy-Davis doubled to left, sending Aracena and Marinello home, followed not long after by an
Alex Britton double to left to score JKD. Newcomer
Dillon Lifrieri made it 10-4 a couple of batters later, pretty much putting things out of reach for UAH.
Aracena,
Chase Bruno and Brazil each added another RBI in the eighth, to put it away for good, 14-4.
Game 2 – UAH 8, ERAU 5
The second game was a reverse in polarity as the Chargers lurched out of the gates to an early 4-0 lead in the first off Eagle pitcher
Justin Webster. A mix of walks, wild pitches and hit batsmen allowed the Chargers to climb ahead.
Off the bat of
Zach Coldsnow, the Eagles got a run back in the bottom of the frame, as Coldsnow rocketed a hit to left field, scoring
Camden Traficante. ERAU added another one in the bottom of the third, when Lifrieri popped a deep sacrifice fly to center field to score Britton, but the Eagles were still down 5-2.
UAH added a pair of runs in the eighth to make it 7-2, but ERAU made it close in their half of the inning, scoring three more. Brazil rocketed a single to right, scoring both
Chase Bruno and pinch runner
Elias Campbell, while Bruno came home in the next at bat on a wild pitch, making it 7-5.
But the Chargers added one more in the top of the ninth to secure the win, as the Eagles went down 1-2-3 in the final frame,
