SAVANNAH, Ga. – Thanks to a four-run fourth and five-run ninth inning, the Embry-Riddle baseball team came away with another road win on Tuesday, taking down the Savannah State Tigers, 10-2, at Tiger Baseball Field.
Â
The Eagles (12-6, 2-1 SSC) plated 10 runners, but only one run was earned as the Eagles took full advantage of seven SSU errors on the day.
Drew Clymer and
Cameron Martinez both had a day, each with a home run on top of multi-hit performances. Clymer's two-run shot – his first career home run – came in the fourth, while Martinez added his solo blast in the sixth. In his first start of the year and holding down right field,
Adam Kuzmicki scored a run and his two-RBI double highlighted the big ninth inning.
Â
On the mound,
John Barone took the ball to start the game for the third time this year, and yielded just one hit and one run over five solid innings. He struck out two to earn the win as well, his first of the year. The ERAU bullpen put together a nice afternoon as well, combining to allow one run on just three hits and three walks with five strikeouts in four innings between
Keagan Perez,
Trevor Nolan and
Jon Shields.Â
Â
The first three innings breezed by with just two hits between the two ball clubs. But the Eagles broke down the door in the fourth.
Tyler Castelli led things off with a walk, then
Drew Clymer rocketed a two-run homer to left field to quickly make it 2-0. Two batters later,
Dillon Lifrieri doubled down the left field line, and moved to third in the next at bat as Kuzmicki reached on an error from the short stop. Martinez then singled to left, driving home Lifrieri, and Kuzmicki came across on a
Chase Bruno sacrifice fly, making it 4-0.
Â
After a quiet fifth from the Eagles, the Tigers pushed a run across, thanks to a sacrifice fly bringing home a walked runner. But in the top of the sixth, backstop
Cameron Martinez dished out his first home run of the year, sending one to left field, making it 5-1.
Â
The seventh inning was quiet all around, but SSU almost made a game of it in the eighth. Thanks to two infield singles and a walk, the Tigers found the bases loaded, down four runs, with just one out. But
Trevor Nolan got out of the jam as quickly, shutting the door with back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning and the threat.
Â
Thanks to three Tiger errors in the top of the ninth, ERAU plated five on just two hits, making the contest all but out of reach. Bruno led off working a walk, then
Camden Traficante followed suit putting two runners on. Castelli then reached on an error as he was laying down a sacrifice bunt; he then moved all the way to third on an error by the pitcher, watching Traficante and Bruno score with ease. Clymer sent a roller to short, but a throwing error allowed Castelli to score to pile on. Aracena then reached base and was eventually brought home along with Clymer by Kuzmicki's loud double down the line. Two ground balls ended the inning in the next two batters, but the Eagles took their 10-1 lead into the bottom half of the last inning.
Â
With just three outs to go,
Jon Shields made his way to the mound for ERAU. The first two Tigers reached via hit-by-pitch and walk, then both advanced to scoring position on a wild pitch. Shields got the next batter to go away swinging, but a walk and a wild pitch brought a run home and left the bases loaded again, again with just one out. But Shields locked in, and just like Nolan in the eighth, shut things down with back-to-back punchouts, ending the game in style.
Â
Having won four consecutive games, the Eagles remain on the road tomorrow (Wednesday) for a showdown with South Carolina Beaufort at 3 p.m.
