Women's Tennis Falls in Close Battle with Midwestern State

DAYTONA BEACH. Fla. – The No. 23 Embry-Riddle women's tennis team (9-3) dropped a midweek matchup against former Eagle head coach Scott Linn's No. 13 Midwestern State (5-3), losing in a close 4-3 battle.

The Eagles started off with a loss in the doubles point, as Itxaso Blanco and Laura Cuesta Bret fell 2-6 to Jessica Binzari and Anda Ghinga in the No. 1 doubles, while Maja Issler and Carla Cabero del Hierro lost 4-6 in the No. 2 matchup against Hannah Yip and Sarah Mazaraki. Jessica Christa Wira Hadipoernomo and Kaylee Kirivong had the redeeming showing for the Eagles, with a 6-4 No. 3 spot win against Skylar Minns and Micaela McSpadden.

Blanco got the Eagles on the board in the No. 1 singles, defeating Binzari 6-1, 6-4. The Mustangs responded in the No. 4 slot as Sofia Giraldo handed Cabero del Hierro a 2-6, 3-6 loss.

Following that were two hard-fought three-set losses for ERAU. Issler faced off against Yip in the No. 2 singles, winning the first set 6-1 before suffering successive 4-6 defeats. Cuesta Bret went up against Ghinga in the No. 3 slot, ranked No. 45 in singles, taking the first set 7-5 before dropping the last two sets 2-6 and 4-6 respectively. The fourth point made the score 4-1, ensuing a Midwestern State victory.

Despite the loss, Embry-Riddle managed to rack up two more wins afterwards.

With Wira Hadipoernomo competing in the No. 5 matchup, she fell behind 4-6 to Minns. However, after battling back to win the second set 6-4, she won the tiebreaker 10-4. In the final finish of the day, Alessia Tripaldelli score a 6-4, 6-2 victory over McSpadden, bringing the final score to a 4-3 Midwestern State win.

It will be a week before the Eagles play again, as they'll resume SSC play next Wednesday at 3:30 as Saint Leo is set to make the cross-state trip to Daytona Beach.
