Softball’s Offense Limited in Doubleheader Loss to No. 4 Spartans

TAMPA, Fla. - Offense was at a premium for the Embry-Riddle softball team in a Saturday doubleheader against fourth-ranked Tampa. The Eagles (18-11, 3-6 Sunshine State Conference) were only able to manage one run on the day, albeit against one of the top pitching staffs in the division with a 0.88 ERA and 0.76 WHIP, losing 5-0 and 2-1.

There was positive news, though. A triple by Lauren Latoria in the first game of the day was the team's 16th of the season, which set a single-season program record despite only being halfway through the 2024 campaign.

GAME 1 | No. 4 Tampa - 5, Embry-Riddle - 0

Embry-Riddle was able to find open spaces in the field, accumulating six hits, but the Eagles just weren't able to string anything together in game one. ERAU was poised to strike first with Latoria's two-out triple in the top of the second, but a pop up ended those aspirations.

Tampa (23-4, 7-2 SSC) mimicked the Eagles in the bottom half of the inning with a triple and a double to score the opening run.

Raissa Bianco and Emma Wood notched back-to-back hits in the third, but the two-out threat ended without any runs scored.

Three more runs were added to the Spartan's score in the bottom of the inning to put Embry-Riddle behind 4-0, and a dropped foul ball eventually led to a fifth run in the next frame. The Eagles threatened again with two outs, this time in the fifth when Kerry O'Sullivan and Bianco singled, but ERAU was caught trying to steal second to end the half inning.

Both Latoria and Bianco went 2-for-3 at the plate. Latoria's fifth career triple moved her into sole possession of eighth on the all-time list.

Mallory Kinahan (L, 6-3) lasted two-and-a-third innings in her start, allowing just one earned run. It was her 64th career appearance and 54th career start, the second and third most in program history. Ava Domenici threw three-and-a-third innings in relief and gave up no earned runs and three hits.

GAME 2 | No. 4 Tampa - 2, Embry-Riddle - 1

Shelby Morse and the Eagle defense did a great job keeping Tampa's offense in check early on. The Blue and Gold retired the first six batters in order with Mia Macchia catching four batted balls in a row out in left field.

However, a triple and sacrifice fly got the home team on the board in the bottom of the third.

Embry-Riddle responded in the fifth when Latoria led off with a single to shortstop. Leah Oberkehr entered as a pinch runner and eventually moved over to third. Macchia then sent a fly ball to shallow left that was caught, but Oberkehr still was able to beat out the throw home to tie the game 1-1.

A leadoff single and two-out triple put the Eagles behind again 2-1 in the bottom of the inning.

Latoria bumped her hit streak up to six games with her second consecutive 2-for-3 performance.

Morse (L, 6-5) pitched well, allowing only two runs over six innings with five hits and three strikeouts.

The Eagles return home for a doubleheader with West Georgia on Tuesday, March 19 at 4 p.m.
