Softball Struggles Against Saint Leo

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Very little went Embry-Riddle softball's way on Saturday, dropping a doubleheader to Saint Leo by scores of 6-1 and 7-3. The Eagles (20-14, 3-9 Sunshine State Conference) could only muster four runs on nine hits between the two games and recorded nine defensive miscues.

GAME 1 | Saint Leo - 6, Embry-Riddle - 1

The Lions (25-10, 12-3 SSC) hastily broke into the scoring column in the first. After two consecutive errors started the game, Saint Leo used a groundout to lead 1-0.

Katriana Bain was inches away from tying the contest with a long double that bounced off the top half of the fence in the second, but she was left stranded.

Back-to-back doubles tacked on another three runs for the Lions in the top of the third.

Two innings later, Mia Macchia showed her strength when she turned a double play. After catching a pop fly in left, the senior sent a dart to Raissa Bianco at second who applied the tag on the runner trying to advance.

ERAU got the goose egg out of the run column in the fifth. Kelsey Kressler was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a single from Mia Macchia. That put the junior in a perfect spot to score on Bianco's sac fly to center for a 4-1 score.

SLU added one run in both the sixth and seventh innings to finalize the score at 6-1.

Macchia had a successful game at the plate, going 2-for-3. Kressler recorded a double in her 1-for-2 effort with a run scored, and Bianco drove in an Eagle. The Piraquara, Brazil native also set a single-game career high in putouts with eight.

Shelby Morse (L, 7-6) gave up four runs in five innings, but all were unearned. Ava Domenici saw two innings of relief action.

GAME 2 | Saint Leo - 7, Embry-Riddle - 3

Three base knocks in the first had the visitors out in front once again with a 1-0 lead. However, Embry-Riddle had its most productive inning offensively in the bottom of the frame.

Bianco got started with a base on balls, and Kerry O'Sullivan followed with a single to second. Delaney Morgan then laid down a sacrifice bunt that turned into a fielding error which allowed Bianco to race home to tie the contest. Morse then stepped in and smashed a two-RBI double to left center to send the Blue and Gold ahead 3-1.

A one-out triple in the second helped the Lions trim ERAU's lead to 3-2 when a groundout sent the runner on third to home.

Great defensive awareness from the Eagles helped them preserve the advantage in the top of the fourth. After Kressler threw a ground ball to Karina Ortiz-Munoz at first in an attempt to throw the batter out, the first baseman saw the runner on third sprinting home and fired the ball to Bain who was able to apply the tag in plenty of time.

Unfortunately, the Eagles lost the lead in the fifth. The leadoff batter doubled to right center and moved to third on a groundout. That set up the opportunity for a sac fly, which SLU took advantage of to tie the score. Two errors then forced another runner to score, putting the home team behind 4-3.

Two walks, a fielding error, and a two-RBI double in the top of the sixth sent the deficit soaring to four runs at 7-3. Though Embry-Riddle did manage to put a runner in scoring position in each of the last two innings, a pair of well-tagged lineouts ended the game.

Emma Wood finished the game 2-for-3 to cap off a productive 7-for-14 week and Morse (1-for-2) drove in a pair of runs.

Mallory Kinahan (L, 7-5) lasted 5.1 innings inside the circle before Wood came in and tossed 1.2 hitless innings. She was busy defensively in the top of the seventh as Wood fielded a ground ball and caught two line drives to retire the side in order.

In the field, Ortiz-Munoz recorded her 227th putout of the season, moving the graduate student into eighth on the program's all-time single-season list. Additionally, Bianco notched her 114th career assist to tie for the ninth most by an Eagle.

The Eagles hit the road next week, traveling to Melbourne, Florida for a series at Florida Tech. It starts with a doubleheader on Thursday, March 28 at 3 p.m.
