WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle softball team completed its seventh shutout of the season on Friday, as the Eagles (27-17, 10-12 SSC) took down Palm Beach Atlantic, 4-0.
Shelby Morse had an all-around day, pitching a complete game shutout in the circle, adding two RBI at the plate in the winning effort.
Â
Morse picked up win number 13 on the year as she held the Sailfish (14-22, 10-15 SSC) to just five hits on the evening. Meanwhile, the Eagles' bats came alive for seven hits, including a pair of extra-base hits.
Â
ERAU, which picked up its sixth win in the last seven outings, struck first on the evening very early in the opening frame off the bat of Morse.
Raissa Bianco led things off with a well-placed single through the left side of the infield, before
Delaney Morgan singled up the middle, though Bianco was tagged out at third on a close play. Morse then sent a hard grounder to short, during which Morgan advanced to third and came around to score thanks to an errant throw from first.
Â
Though the Eagles went down in order over the next three frames, Morse stood strong in the circle, yielding just one hit and one hit-by-pitch in that stretch, keeping things in the Blue & Gold's favor, 1-0. PBA threatened for the first time in the fourth with two runners aboard, but Morse forced a pop up to second to end the potential game-tying tying inning.
Â
ERAU struck again in the sixth in a big way. With one out, Bianco singled up the middle and proceeded to steal second base in the next at bat. From there, Morgan drew a walk to put two runners on, and Morse punched a ball up the middle, scoring the speeding Bianco from second. Next,
Karina Ortiz-Munoz ripped a liner all the way to the wall, clearing the bases in the process. Ortiz-Munoz tested third base on the play, trying to pick up the Eagles' 19
th triple of the season, but was called out on another close play at the bag, but the damage was done and the Eagles found themselves up 4-0 with just nine outs remaining.Â
Â
PBA threatened again late, this time with an error and a single up the middle, but an excellent combined double play featuring
Ashton Aycock, Bianco and Ortiz-Munoz ended the danger to preserve the shutout. PBA added a double to open up the seventh inning, but Morse got the final three batters to go down by way of strikeout, fly out and pop up to earn the complete game shutout and the Eagles' 27
th win on the year.
Â
Up next, the Eagles and Sailfish will continue the series on Saturday with a double header slated to begin at 1 p.m.Â
