Kressler, Morse Aid Softball to Series Win Over Sailfish

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle softball team captured its third straight Sunshine State Conference series on Saturday with a doubleheader split against Palm Beach Atlantic. The bats struggled to get going in game one as the Eagles fell 4-0 but bounced back with a decisive 10-3 victory in game two. It was the first time ERAU (28-18, 11-13 SSC) took a three-game road series from the Sailfish (15-23, 11-16 SSC).

GAME 1 | Palm Beach Atlantic - 4, Embry-Riddle - 0

The first half of game one was stagnant as neither team could string together anything offensively.

Raissa Bianco started the game by extending her hitting streak to nine games with a single up the middle. In the bottom of the first, PBA had a runner on second with one out. That Sailfish stole third and took off for home when the throw down escaped into left field. However, Mia Macchia charged in and threw a laser to Katriana Bain at home to nail the runner.

Palm Beach Atlantic surged ahead in the fourth when five hits and an error allowed the home team to score four times in the frame. On a positive note, Bianco did throw a runner out at home.

The sixth saw Delaney Morgan beat out a throw for a single and steal two bases to put a runner on third for the Eagles. However, Embry-Riddle was unable to capitalize.

Six different members of the Blue and Gold recorded a hit while Bain had the team's lone extra-base hit, which was a double in the fourth. It was her third double in the last four games.

Mallory Kinahan (L, 7-8) rang up three batters over six innings of work.

GAME 2 | Embry-Riddle - 10, Palm Beach Atlantic - 3

Embry-Riddle started the scoring in the second when Karina Ortiz-Munoz started the inning with a double. She proceeded to swipe third and then touched home when Shelby Morse blooped a pitch to right that landed inches in front of a diving outfielder.

PBA responded with haste in the next half inning when a hit and throwing error had two Sailfish in scoring position. A sacrifice fly then brought a runner in to tie the game.

The third inning was the first of three frames in a row that starting pitcher Morse and the Eagle defense faced the minimum. They were able to hold PBA to just one run and two hits over the first five innings.

Back-to-back doubles from Kelsey Kressler and Macchia added three more runs to the Eagles' total for a 4-1 advantage in the fourth.

In the bottom of the frame, Kressler fielded a hard-hit line drive and tossed to Ortiz-Munoz at first for a 5-3 double play.

Embry-Riddle doubled its lead in the sixth. Morse sent a no-doubter way past the left field fence for a solo shot, her second of the season. The bats stayed hot as Morgan and Sydney Linn secured singles, setting up Kressler for yet another multi-RBI double. The junior scored soon after on a wild pitch for an 8-1 advantage.

Palm Beach Atlantic cut into Embry-Riddle's lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth, but the Eagles went back ahead by seven in the seventh thanks to a wild pitch that allowed Ortiz-Munoz to race home and a fielding error that brought Morse in for a 10th run.

Morse (W, 14-7) was dominant from both sides, recording a complete game win after allowing three runs, only one of which was earned, and striking out a batter. It was her 14th victory of the season, which is the eighth-most by any Eagle ever. At the plate, the Napa, California product notched a season-high four hits in as many at-bats with a pair of runs and RBIs. Her seven total bases tied for the 10th most in a game in program history, and she became the third Eagle this season and the 11th all-time to tally four or more hits in a game. Morse was one of five Eagles to score multiple times in the game.

Another was Kressler, who finished 2-for-4 with a career-best four RBIs. Macchia added two RBIs on one hit. Ortiz-Munoz went 2-for-4 with two scores. One of those hits was a double to give the graduate student 27 on her career, the fifth-most on the program's single-season list. Linn and Morgan each scored twice with one hit.

Morgan stole her 22nd base of the season on Saturday to move into a tie for the fourth-most on the single-season all-time list. She also improved to fourth on the career list with 33.

In the field, Kressler moved up to fifth in the record book for the most assists in a season with 86.

The road trip continues for the Eagles as they'll travel to Lakeland, Florida next week to face Florida Southern for a series beginning on Friday, April 26 with a doubleheader at 5 p.m.
