DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle baseball team dropped a double header against Palm Beach Atlantic on Saturday as the Sailfish claim the series at Sliwa Stadium. PBA (14-24, 11-13 SSC) won game one, 7-4, and game two, 8-4, over the Eagles (23-17, 10-11 SSC)
Â
Game 1Â
Palm Beach Atlantic jumped out to an early 4-0 lead on ERAU thanks to a four-run second inning. Eagle starter
Max Meyer gave up five runs total, lasting 4.1 innings in the effort, though he did strike four batters out. The Sailfish used two RBI singles and a bases loaded walk in the inning to take the advantage.Â
Â
ERAU added a run back in the bottom of the third.
Matthew Coker singled to the pitcher with out, then
Chase Bruno followed that with a single of his own, putting two aboard.
Camden Traficante then reached on a fielder's choice, and Coker scooted all the way home from second thanks to an errant throw.Â
Â
The Eagles made a game of it, cutting the lead to 4-3 in the next inning.
AJ Marinello led off with a hit-by-pitch, then
Alex Britton singled through the left side to place two runners on bases.
Timo Aracena then singled to left to load the bags. After a pitching change,
Jeremy Kennedy-Davis drove a ball deep enough for a sacrifice fly to plate Marinello, but a misjudged throw also allowed Britton to score from second, making it 4-3.
Â
But PBA struck for three more runs in the fifth, thanks to a double, walk and three consecutive singles, going up 7-3.
Dillon Lifrieri sent a moonshot over the left field wall in the bottom of the ninth, but by then the damage had been done and the 'Fish swam away with the game one victory.
Â
Game 2
The second of the DH was a story with a different beginning, but similar ending. The Eagles pounced out of the gates in the first inning for four runs. Bruno earned a one-out hit-by-pitch, then Traficante worked a walk to put two on. From there,
Tyler Castelli singled to right, loading the bases for ERAU.
AJ Marinello then doubled to deep left, and if the ball hadn't been caught up in the fencing, would have scored three runs. Nonetheless, Lifrieri then singled to third base, deep enough to beat the throw out to score Castelli to make it 4-0 Eagles quickly.
Â
But that would be all the scoring for the Eagles on the day, as they were shutout for the final eight innings. PBA added two runs in the fourth and two in the sixth to tie it up at 4-4. Just as it looked as if the game could be in ERAU's hands, or at least go to extras, the Sailfish exploded for four runs in the top of the ninth to eventually walk away with the Saturday sweep.Â
Â
Up next, the Eagles will make their final step out of conference play as they welcome Valdosta State to Sliwa Stadium Tuesday night.
