Softball Takes Two From Lynn on Saturday; Secures Series Sweep With 7-6 Walk-Off Win

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - In what was a nail-biting three-game series, the Embry-Riddle softball team found a way to win a pair of close games on Saturday to sweep Lynn, beating the Fighting Knights 4-3 and 7-6. It was the first conference series sweep of the season for the Blue and Gold.

After battling back from a one-run deficit in the sixth inning in game one of the doubleheader, the Eagles (24-16, 7-11 Sunshine State Conference) then went to extras once again in game two, and erased a two-run deficit in the eighth to earn the program's seventh walk-off win of the year, a single-season high.

GAME 1 | Embry-Riddle - 4, Lynn - 3

A fielding error, a pair of stolen bases, and a sac bunt brought the leadoff batter all the way around the diamond for the first run of the game for Lynn (11-30, 2-19 SSC) in the top of the first. The Fighting Knights then loaded the bases, but starting pitcher Mallory Kinahan struck out the next hitter to prevent any further damage.

Raissa Bianco mimicked Lynn by recording a single to start the bottom of the first. A groundout and flyout advanced Bianco to third, and she was able to score when Katriana Bain found space in center to tie the score 1-1.

Embry-Riddle swiftly took the lead in the next frame when Mia Macchia used a two-out single and a couple of wild pitches to stand on third. Kerry O'Sullivan bounced a ball back to Lynn's pitcher, who then overthrew the first baseman to let Macchia score for a 2-1 lead.

Kinahan continued to deal inside the circle, retiring the Fighting Knights in order for back-to-back innings in the second and third.

Neither squad was able to string anything else together until the sixth when a pair of runs scored on a fielding miscue to put the Eagles behind 3-2.

The team promptly responded in the bottom half of the inning. A one-out walk for Lauren Latoria had pinch runner Leah Oberkehr on first. She stole second and continued to third on a fielding misplay by the third baseman before Kelsey Kressler laid down an RBI sacrifice bunt to tie the score. With Karina Ortiz-Munoz now on third, the graduate student touched home on a wild pitch to put the home team back in front 4-3.

Lynn threatened to rally in the top of the seventh with a leadoff single. However, Bain threw the runner out attempting to steal second for the second out. Had Bain not nailed the baserunner, the Fighting Knights likely would have scored when the next batter singled, proving to be a pivotal game-changing play by the catcher.

Macchia was a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate with a run.

It was another stellar start for Kinahan, who allowed just one unearned run over five innings with two hits and three strikeouts. Emma Wood (W, 5-0) stayed undefeated on the season with two innings of work and a strikeout.

GAME 2 | Embry-Riddle - 7, Lynn - 6

ERAU got the scoring started in the third when Bianco was clipped by a pitch, stole second, and scored on Wood's base knock through the right side.

Lynn answered in the top of the fourth with multiple singles and wild pitches to even the score.

The runs continued in the bottom of the inning. This time it was Delaney Morgan who was hit by a pitch and swiped second. She eventually advanced to third and baited a throw that skipped into left field, allowing Morgan to touch home.

A single and a double by the Fighting Knights once again tied the score in the fifth. However, a throw down to second rolled into center to allow a pair of runners to score to send Lynn ahead 4-2.

Wood reached base on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the fifth. A fielding error by the second baseman pushed the sophomore to third, which gave Morgan the opportunity to put a ball in play on the infield to bring Wood in to make it a 4-3 contest.

In the sixth, Bain made another spectacular play at catcher. On a popped-up bunt attempt, Bain dove to make the catch in foul ground and immediately tossed to second to throw out a runner attempting to advance for a double play.

Still down one in the seventh, another defensive misplay, this time by the first baseman, had Sydney Linn on with no outs. She stole second and was able to score on Latoria's double to deep center field to send the game into extras.

The situation turned bleak in the eighth. With two outs and the bases loaded, a mishandled ground ball brought in a pair of unearned runs to make the score 6-4 in favor of the visitors.

All hope was not lost as the Eagles attempted to rally, starting with Bianco getting hit by a pitch with one out. O'Sullivan then slapped a single to center, and Bianco then scored on a fielding error from the shortstop. Still with just one out, Linn doubled to left to bring O'Sullivan in to tie the game. After Morgan got on to load the bases, Serenity Jaenichen stayed disciplined and was struck by a pitch to walk in the game-winning run.

O'Sullivan finished 2-for-5 with a run. Macchia (2-for-4) notched multiple hits for the second straight game. Wood also contributed with one hit in five at-bats, two runs and two RBIs.

Shelby Morse (W, 10-7) pitched a second consecutive eight-inning complete game, racking up five strikeouts.

The win increased the Eagles' winning streak to 12 games over Lynn, and improved ERAU's record to 24-4 all-time against the Fighting Knights.

Up next is a home series with No. 25 Nova Southeastern next weekend, beginning with one game on Friday, April 12 at 6 p.m.
