Saints March Past Eagles Baseball, 6-4

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – In stark contrast to the series opener a week ago, the Embry-Riddle baseball team dropped a 6-4 decision to the visiting Flagler Saints at Sliwa Stadium on Tuesday. The Eagles fall to 19-14 on the year, while Flagler moves to 17-20.

ERAU took the first game of the home-and-home set, 14-1, but floundered from the get-go on Tuesday. The Saints capitalized with a 4-0 lead in the first three innings to escape. The Eagles were held to just seven hits, six of which came after the fourth inning. Alex Britton marked the only batter to grab a pair of base hits, going 2-for-4 with a run scored. Timo Aracena, Jeremy Kennedy-Davis, Matthew Coker and Chase Bruno all collected RBI on one hit a piece.

The Eagles threw three arms on Tuesday, with Justin Webster getting the start. Webster tossed 5.0 solid innings of work, yielding three earned on five hits and a walk to a strikeout. Working quite efficiently until the end of his turn was John Barone. Barone took the loss with a run allowed in the top of the ninth, but breezed through the order in 3.2 innings of work. He allowed just one hit and struck two out. Joe Balsam wrapped things up with 0.1IP and a strikeout to three hits.

The Saints registered nine hits on the evening with all nine coming as singles. Three of those and a sacrifice fly made started things off with FC up 4-0 after three innings. The Eagles finally struck in the fifth inning as Aracena flew out and sacrificed his at bat as Britton came across to score. Soon after, Jeremy Kennedy-Davis followed suit with a sacrifice fly to plate Dillon Lifrieri, cutting the lead to 4-2.

Between the sixth and seventh innings, both clubs combined for 23 pitches to record 12 outs as the game quickly progressed. Then in the eighth inning, the Eagles struck gold again. Aracena and Coker went stand-up doubles back to back, making it 4-3, then Bruno singled to right to score Coker and tie things up with the game winding down.

But in the ninth, Flagler capitalized with a pair of two-out singles to drive in two runs to extend their lead. ERAU looked poised to keep things interesting as Marinello was plucked in the head on the first pitch of the inning, then Britton followed with a single to left center. But with no outs and two runners on, the Eagles couldn't scratch a run across, ultimately falling to the Saints, 6-4.

ERAU will stay on the road this weekend with a three-game stand at Nova Southeastern beginning Friday.
