DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Thanks to yet another walk off effort from
Chase Bruno, this time in the bottom of the 13th inning of Game 1, the Embry-Riddle baseball team sent its seniors out with a wild win, but the Eagles (31-19, 17-13 SSC) and Barry (28-22, 16-14 SSC) split the day. The Buccaneers claimed the series with two wins over the weekend.
Â
Game 1
The two clubs combined for 25 hits in the first game of the twin bill on Saturday, but only three of those went for extra bases. The final one, however, came off the bat of
Chase Bruno all the way in the 13th inning.Â
Â
Josh Reynolds, a part of the nine-member senior class honored before the game – along with Bruno,
Alex Britton,
John Barone,
Tyler Castelli,
Jeremy Kennedy-Davis,
Dillon Lifrieri,
Cameron Martinez and
Dillon Moran – put together a 3-for-6 day at first base early in the day, and his infield single in the 13th led to the winning run. Kennedy-Davis sacrificed his at bat to get Reynolds to second before
Elias Campbell came on as a pinch runner, representing the winning run. Britton was hit by a pitch in the next at bat, before Bruno sent his second game winner of the year into the outfield to get Campbell across in a thrilling end.
Â
Bruno, Reynolds and Kennedy-Davis registered three hits apiece on the afternoon in the special senior day win. Castelli added two more hits, as did
Timo Aracena. On the mound,
Keagan Perez earned the start but exited in the third after a hard comebacker hit his arm. From there,
Tristan Harley worked for 3.0 innings, before
Max Meyer came on for two more. But it was
Joe Balsam who picked up the win after 6.0 innings of relief work into the extra frames. He gave up just one run on a meager two hits and one walk to four strikeouts.Â
Â
Bruno collected the first of two RBI in the third inning to open the scoring, plating Kennedy-Davis. BU countered back in the fifth with a two-RBI single, then again in the sixth with an RBI double to go up 3-1.Â
Â
Britton doubled home JKD and Aracena in the seventh to tie it, with both runners making the extra effort to get home under pressure. Later in the inning,
Camden Traficante reached on a fielder's choice that gave the Eagles a 4-3 lead after Britton crossed the plate. Barry tied it in the ninth on a double down the left field line before a second pitches' duel took place. But then Bruno's walkoff secured the then-series tie, 5-4.
Â
Game 2
The final game of the regular season was a completely different story, however. The Eagles were held to just six total hits, one in the first four innings. Barry jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning before the Eagles finally scored in the fifth.
Â
After Lifrieri drew a leadoff walk in the fifth, Aracena singled to short center to put two aboard. From there, strangely, back-to-back wild pitches moved both runners across the plate. The first one put the Eagle duo at second and third, then the second plated two after Aracena made an aggressive turn at third, where stood the Barry third baseman. The two collided and Aracena was given home due to interference, making it 3-2.
Â
But from there it was all Barry. A two-run homer in the sixth and a solo shot in the seventh paved the way for a three-run eighth and a three-run ninth, all runs coming via RBI singles.Â
Â
The Eagles got runs from a Lifrieri sacrifice fly in the eighth and a Bruno RBI single in the ninth, scoring Reynolds, but it was too little too late as the Bucs ran away, 12-4.
Â
With the regular season concluded, the Eagles will tune into the NCAA II selection show on Sunday night at 10:30 p.m. to see if and where they might play in the post season. Sitting at the No. 3 spot in the South Region, even with the 1-2 weekend, the Eagles are more than likely in a position to play a 51st game.
